Bharat Biotech gets permission to manufacture 'Covaxin' for sale

New Delhi, Jan 3 (IANS): The Central Licensing Authority on Sunday granted permission to Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech to manufacture 'Covaxin' for sale and distribution, after the indigenous coronavirus vaccine received regulatory approval for emergency use.

"The Central Licensing Authority has granted permission to Bharat Biotech International Ltd to manufacture for sale of the pharmaceutical formulation," a top source told IANS.

Earlier on Sunday, Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) V.G. Somani announced that Bharat Biotech's 'Covaxin' has been approved for "restricted use in emergency situation". The approval has also been given to Serum Institute of India's 'Covishield' vaccine.

The Subject Expert Committee of Central Drugs Standards Control Organisation had recommended restricted use of Covaxin "in emergency situation in public interest as an abundant precaution, in clinical trial mode, specially in the context of infection by mutant strains". Officals say that it will be used as backup in case of spike in cases.

Covaxin has to be administered in two doses and can be stored at 2-8 degree Celsius. This is a major relief for India which has the second highest number of infections in the world after the US.

Bharat Biotech is India's first indigenous vaccine for coronavirus. The inactivated virus vaccine is developed in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the National Institute of Virology (NIV).

"Covaxin has generated excellent safety data with robust immune responses to multiple viral proteins that persist," Krishna Ella, Chairman and Managing Director of the pharmaceutical firm said following the approval.

    The Central Government appears super-keen to keep India's vaccine-spend in India.

    However, just as I have predicted...

    ...despite all the earlier news about 'Free for all', it looks like NO Central/State governments seem to be rushing to buy the vaccines on behalf of the public. There is no spare money!

    Regardless, no vaccine company is forthcoming with any real numbers on their product's usefulness.

    Without any vaccine:
    * 80% of infections are mild or asymptomatic
    * the death-rate overall < 1%

    Will ANY vaccine better these numbers?

Army is reporting something to the govt but this govt is twisting it and telling us something totally different spiced up stories. What is the big benefit and usefulness of this vaccine if not used for any normal Covid patient. Using in emergency situation is like using on a patient who has no hope of surviving anyway and no regrets if that patient dies even after taking this vaccine. Govt is not clear on this critical health matter and the percentage of efficacy of this vaccine. Govt should confidently hold a press conference proudly on this indegeniuosly manufactured one of a kind vaccine and clarify to the nation. But BJP govt doesn’t have that 56’’ chest!!!!!!??????......

    The permission is for manufacturer , distribution and sale, not only for emergency use. It is based on a vaccine from inactivated virus which is a time tested concept.
