Brazil registers 293 new Covid-19 deaths


Brasilia, Jan 4 (IANS): Brazil registered 293 new fatalities due to the novel coronavirus, increasinf the national death toll to 196,018, the Ministry of Health announced.

Besides the fatalities on Sunday, the Ministry also confirmed 17,341 new cases, taking the nationwide infection tally to 7,733,746, Xinhua news agency.

Brazil currently accounts for world's second highest Covid-19 death toll, after the US, and the third largest caseload, after the US and India.

The state of Sao Paulo, the most populous in the country, has registered 46,845 Covid-19 deaths and 1,471,422 cases in total.

The state of Minas Gerais comes in the second place with nearly 550,000 infections and 12,023 fatalities.
