Don't deserve this backlash, says Covaxin maker Bharat Biotech

Hyderabad, Jan 5 (IANS): Bharat Biotech Chairman Krishna Ella said on Monday that the company does not deserve the backlash it is receiving in the light of India's drugs regulator granting its coronavirus vaccine Covaxin approval for emergency use.

"Don't accuse us of inexperience. We are a global company... have manufactured 16 vaccines," he said, highlighting that "200 percent honest" clinical trials were conducted.

Ella said the company conducts clinical trials not only in India but also in many other countries.

His comments assume significance as Covaxin has been given an emergency approval despite allegedly only two of the required three trial phases being completed.

However, Ella pointed at the number of journal articles Bharat Biotech published and claimed that it was the first to identify the Zika virus and file a patent for Zika and Chikungunya viruses.

Bharat Biotech was the only company to have a Bio Safety Level 3 (BSL- 3) production facility, he noted.

"We do 200 percent honest clinical trials and yet we receive a backlash. If I am wrong, tell me. Some companies have branded me 'water'. I want to deny that. We are scientists," he said.

Bharat Biotech may be a reputed company and may have many successful scientists with them. But when a proper procedure has to be followed to bring out a vaccine follow it and roll out the vaccine that's all people are asking. Do not consider the common people like guinea pigs.

In US the nexus between FDA & Vaccine companies is well known, those people in prominent posts in Vaccine industries get on Board of FDA & once they retire there they get appointed back in the vaccine industries, which signals quid pro quo.
Many politicians are on pay roll of them in US too. Ronald Reagan in 1986 brought a new bill which gives indemnity to vaccine industries, from then on they aren't liable to pay compensation to any vaccine injured or dead people, they will get a limited compensation from the govt. through courts now.
In US companies give donations to political parties openly& it isn't illegal but in India it is criminal act.
Here nobody knows what goes on as cash rich companies getting licenses or approval with emergency provisions of pandemic can't be questioned too!

of course you deserve the backlash - being Indian has nothing to do with it. If you had stayed true to the principles of validation and published data properly, you would not have had to face the backlash. Past good performance does not absolve you from responsible development.
