Farmers toughen stand on 3 laws ahead of talks with government

New Delhi, Jan 8 (IANS): The farmers' agitation against the farm laws entered the 44th day on Friday with the groups showing no signs of budging from their stand ahead of the eighth round of talks with the government slated to take place later in the day.

The meeting is being held a day after the farmers held the tractor March on the Eastern and Western Peripheral Highway on the Delhi borders in which over 5,000 tractors and trolleys took part.

The farmer leaders will arrive at the Vigyan Bhawan where the meeting is likely to be held at 2 p.m.

The farmers have been demanding the repealing of the three farm laws and a guarantee of the minimum support price (MSP) for their produce.

The seventh round of talks between the farmers and the government remained inconclusive on January 4.

The government has said that it is ready to make amendments in the three laws, however, the farmers are adamant about repealing all three.

Punjab farmer leader and Bharatiya Kisan Union (Lakhowal) General Secretary Harinder Singh, who was also present during the seventh round of talks, told IANS: "The demands of the farmers will remain the same today. We will urge the government to repeal the three farm laws. And then we will talk on the MSP issue."

Till date, Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar, Union Consumer Affairs Minister Piyush Goyal and Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Som Prakash have taken the lead in speaking to the farmer leaders.

Many times we tend not to support anything/everything a government (we don't favor,) enacts. But the Farm Bills are not like that - many of those protesting farmers are BJP's voters. Let me explain why/how :

Agriculture in India was functioning like, a farmer grew rice/wheat/sugar, etc., filled it in gunny bags (or whatever possible packing to his affordability) and sold at the society's market and took the price as fixed by the government. His job is over, he went home with whatever he got and got busy with preparing for his next crop. While in the market, wholesalers bought that produce from the society on wholesale, packed it into 1 Kg, or 2, 5, 10, 25 Kg bags, put their logo/name, packing date and supplied it to the dealers. Well, when this step comes, it might be 5 times more than what they purchased, or 10 times more. That is why, a farmer gets 1 Rupee for Onion per Kg and we pay 100 Rupees.

The reason for Farm Laws is, some corporators went to concerned departments and said that they would promote the farm produce. The Department consults the ministry and you all know, our ministries are handled by Gujjus. 'What do I/we get' ? The corporate asks what do you want ? Well, contribute to Party Funds or the latest is 'PM Cares' This is where the matter becomes murkier. BJP has received heavy donations to win elections may it be Assembly or State. The Corporates are stuck as a bone in the throat which Modi/Shah can't swallow or spit out.

Please tell me friends, at this situation, how can the Farm Laws be withdrawn ? On the contrary, with GST added and Copyright accounted for, what will be the selling price once it's gone to the corporators ? Secondly, if they want a farmer to product just the produce they are ordering, how is it possible. And, there is no guarantee that the corporator is making the payment.

Do you guys now understand why the farmers don't wat the Farm Bills ?

I feel proud to have come from a farmer background.

This is first time since 1947 that such unity and determination is exhibited.

Keep up brothers, don't give in to loot corporates' supporters who in a way happen to be themselves looters.
