IUML youth wing against party MPs contesting Kerala Assembly polls

Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 9 (IANS): The Muslim Youth League, the youth wing of Kerala's Indian Union Muslim League, has called upon party elders to emulate the path followed by the Congress in not allowing sitting MPs to contest the Assembly polls.

The Congress high command has already issued an intimation to all its state units not to allow any sitting Members of Parliament to contest any Assembly elections in 2021.

A recent high powered meeting of the Youth League has passed a resolution against senior party leaders, who are sitting MPs, contesting the 2021 Assembly elections. They have already met the party supremo, Panakkad Hyder Ali Shihab Thangal and handed over the resolution to him.

IUML national General Secretary, P.K. Kunhallikutty, who is a Lok Sabha member, has announced his intention to contest the next Assembly elections. P.V. Abdul Wahab, who is a member of the Rajya Sabha, is also trying to fight the Assembly elections.

A state Youth League leader, who does not want to be named, said: "Muslim League must rethink. Sitting MPs must not contest Assembly elections... it is a wrong precedent. Kunhalikutty has already announced that he is contesting elections and P.V. Abdul Wahab is also trying to contest. We advise them to follow the Congress party decision in not allowing any sitting MPs to contest Assembly elections."
