Kundapur: Unscientific road work causes accidents, officials unconcerned

Daijiworld Media Network - Kundapur (SP)

Kundapur, Jan 9: Accidents continue to occur at Trasi junction on national highway 66 between the town and Byndoor because of unscientific road works. However, neither the highway department nor the road contractors have taken it seriously. Recently they did something there but it was of no consequence.

After another accident happened at Trasi junction recently, the locals held a protest and insisted that the company to which the road contract has been given and also the officials of the highways authority have to visit the spot, study the problem and undertake repairs. The officials visited the spot and assured to attend to the problem. A few days back, tar powder from somewhere was poured here, but it was of no use whatsoever, the locals said.

Since the beginning of the highway works, Trasi junction has become unscientific. For the people moving towards Movady from Trasi and those Trasi from there are facing problems. The divider here is not very wide, and buses and fish trucks cannot wait near the divider crossing to cross the road. There is no service road and the junction itself is improperly designed. These facts were repeatedly brought to the notice of officials, contractors and others, but nothing has been done to address the problem.

As vehicles approach the point at high speed, those who have to cross the road towards Movady or towards Trasi face a lot of risks. The major work needed here is to widen the road divider and provide street light. There should be a facility for the pedestrians to cross the road. The contractors, IRB Company, say their machinery is in Karwar, said Santhosh Poojary, a local.

Byndoor MLA B K Sukumar Shetty, said that a meeting of the officers of the highway department and officials of the contracting form, IRB, will be convened within a month to address the problems on the highway here and find a remedy.

Whole NH 66 is unscientific. 10th Class student can design better roads looking at scientific road designs from google! They are quite scientific and successful in collecting tolls without completing the work! Too thirsty for money!

The whole of NH 66 is unscientific. There are no proper entry and exit ramps which creates traffic jams (A highways should have smooth flowing traffic without having to stop), the road has been barricated & controlled with traffic lights in few places which believe it or not defeats the purpose of a National Highway, there are potholes every 100 meters and upon that they collect toll and road tax. It is a shame that this sub standard work has been allowed to pass under our noses for years and elected representatives taking no actions.

Corruption right in front of our eyes.
