Kundapur, Feb 11: Vishwanath Devadiga, a  21-year-old youth has created a new record in running the 100 metres distance of Kambala fields in just 9.15 seconds.

The buffaloes that Vishwanath rode at Kantabare–Boodabare Kambala race at Aikala on February 6 have covered a distance of 100 meters in merely 9.15 seconds. Hitting the new record, Vishwanath of Naikanakatte, Narigude, Kergalu village has made the headlines. The passion for the sport hidden in him surfaced when he broke the record that was in the name of Srinivas Gowda, who is also known as Indian Usain Bolt.

Vishwanath was born to couple Ganesh and Lalita on March 24, 1997. After his SSLC he went to Mumbai looking for a job. As he wanted to study further, he completed his PUC at a night school. He then returned to his home town and indulged in agriculture. The house had buffaloes from where he gained experience of rearing them. He made use of the experience in the Kambala race. Suresh Kadinatar encouraged his interest in Kambala and introduced him to Thenkuthittu Kambala.

He stepped into the Kambala fields for the first time after holding the rope of Jaya-Vijaya buffaloes of Janardhan Devadiga and Harish Devadiga. He later excelled in the buffalo races of big owners. He had managed to build a name for himself on the Kambala fields that spectators always expected him to be the winner.

It is not easy to run with buffaloes used in Kambala. It requires preparations and courage. In the past, Akkeri Suresh Shetty had covered the distance of 100 metres in 9.37 seconds, Srinivas Gowda in 9.55 seconds and Anand in 9.57 seconds.

Why these people are comparing with Usain bolt? Running behind bffuelo and running on track is entirely different. I am 68 years old and I am walking with difficulty, but when dog started chasing me last month I ran like Usain bolt.

While appreciating the athleticism And commitment of this youngster Possibly difficult conditions and lack of training by professionals.. How ever getting acceleration from a buffalo which can reach 57 kms per hour to be checked If one gets additional speed ..check independently . This is from the point of usain bolt etc Anyway cheers ..

Congratulations Vishwanath! Let us praise and be proud our archivers in the Kambla sport. But never compare it them with professional athletes which will be demeaning for both sports as they have been set with completely different bench marks.

First of all, most of the (almost all) Kambala tracks in Mangalore-Udupi region are in the range of 130-160 meters in length. Our 'master-piece' comparators are considering the total time taken by the pair of buffaloes-driver to reach this length (~130 to 150 meters) and then converting that total duration in to time taken for 100 meters!! Now, many viewers will yell, " It is one and same". I know, but we should always keep in mind that people of the class of Usain Bolt, Yohan Blake, Justin Gatlin etc. generates great power within themselves and reach the target with 'exact' 100 meters. There are accurate time measuring devices too; obviously, Olympic medals are most often won with only 1-2 seconds difference. Anyways, Congratulations Vishwanath Devadiga for creating a new record in Kambala! well done.

there should also be count of how many lashes/whips has been done to the poor animal during the race... if the animal has been lashed/flogged more than specified limit, should be disqualified from the race... on the whole, it is better if this pervert and sadistic entertainment form is consigned to history... "Hinduism teaches that a part of God resides in all living things, which forms the atman. As such, reverence and respect for animals is taught." - Source Wikipedia....
