'Wanted to do something for Kerala': Metroman Sreedharan joins BJP

Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 26 (IANS): Despite coming under flak over his decision, Delhi Metro's first and iconic Managing Director E. Sreedharan on Thursday evening joined the BJP during its state chief K. Surendran's yatra in Malappurram district.

"The decision to join the BJP marks a new phase in my life. I always wanted to do something for Kerala... I felt it would be best to join the BJP and I have done that," Sreedharan said at the public meeting, thanking top BJP leaders for making it possible.

Popularly known as the Metroman, he had enjoyed a cult image not only in Kerala, but across the country for his work and respect cutting across political lines. However, things took a nosedive from the moment Surendran last week broke the news that the 88-year-old will not only join the BJP, but also contest the upcoming Assembly polls.

Elattuvalapil Sreedharan is credited with changing the face of public transport in India with his leadership in building the Konkan Railway and the Delhi Metro while he served as the Managing Director of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation. Later he helmed several other metro projects in key cities.

After Surendran's announcement, all were waiting for Sreedharan's confirmation, and the moment, he came out with a "yes" for BJP, many responded with shock.

On Thursday morning, a police official attached to the Ponnani Police station in Sreedharan's home town in Malappuram told IANS that quite a few complaints have started coming over the phone against Sreedharan for his statements on "love jihad" and against those who eat beef that came on an English news channel.

"Till now, we have received oral complaints against Sreedharan. The police will look into it and proceed according to the rules. So one will have to wait to see what happens to these oral complaints," said the police official who did not wish to be identified.

There has been a sharp spike in anti-Sreedharan posts on social media following his decision, while both the CPI-M-led Left Democratic Front and the Congress-led United Democratic Front have expressed surprise at his decision.

Sreedharan Ji, you have joined the wrong party if you wanted to do for KERALA. As a Metro man BJP has NOT INVITED you for the inauguration of the METRO you built??? If you had real respect for your sacrifice for the metro you built you shouldn't have joined the BJP. At least you see the party's ideology and principles before joining any party. You have made a wrong choice!!!

It's too late sir for you to do anything for Kerala, leave alone doing good. You have already 'missed the train'. Now lead a peaceful rest of your life and let younger generation think their way......Moreover, the party you have chosen to do good is anything but good..

He wants to do something for Kerala at the age of 88. What was he doing for Kerala before Age 88. Has he done something good or spell out his achievements for Kerala before Joining politics. He has joined BJP because of his hatred towards Islam and love jihad. There is nothing as love jihad, people with shit brains like metro man have fallen for it. Jihad has a different meaning in Islam. Anyway metro man will be finished to zero in Kerala, mark my words.

Mr. Sreedharan has committed a monumental Blunder by joining the BJP - no doubt , his past credentials were outstanding. Now with his recent utterances He has lost the goodwill of all those who admired him. Keralites are intelligent and politically very well informed, his parroting Love Jihad , Beef eating and other polarisation talks will backfire- he says he has done good work the last 67 years but BJP says no work was done last 70 years .......?......?.?....?... bit difficult to understand -

A politician and a bureaucrat work at two different levels: akin to a board member and a manager. The Metroman has done well as the latter. Getting into a politician's shoes will be testing the Peter Principle. Regardless, if he 'hates' the beef-eaters, he has already lost 80% of the Keralites. Just for the record: I do not eat beef or any animals.

Few years ago Dr Shivaram Karanth contested the election in coastal Karnataka. He was a Jnanapith Awardee and a Kannada culture ambassador. He received only a few hundreds of votes. Hope this will not repeat in Kerala.
