Mangaluru: Rama-Lakshmana Jodukere Kambala kicks off with traditional fervour

Mangaluru, Mar 6: President of Sri Brahma Baidarkala Garodi, Kankanady, K Chittaranjan inaugurated the fourth edition of Rama-Lakshmana Jodukere Kambala held under the leadership of Capt Brijesh Chowta on Saturday March 6 at Goldfinch City, Bangra Kulur.

Anantha Padmanabha Asranna of Kateel Shri Durgaparameshwari Temple, speaking during the occasion said, "Kambala is a part of the agriculture and culture of Tulunadu. People in Tulunadu should be educated on Kambala to keep this culture alive."

Former MLC Capt Ganesh Karnik, delivering the presidential address said, "When paddy cultivation is declining in the parts of rural areas, Kambala is helping to keep agriculture prosperous. Kambala will also help the development of tourism in the district. Cultural activities like these will preserve the culture and help to strengthen human relationships.”

Raja Yogi Nirmalnath of Kadali Yogeshwara Math Kadri, Swami Ekagamyananda of Ramakrishna Math, Vajra Karnanthaya Ballal, Jayaram Shetty Kudumburu, former MLC Monappa Bhandary and others were present.

Kambala committee president Capt Brijesh Chowta welcomed the gathering. General secretary Sujith Prathap rendered the vote of thanks.

Over a 100 pairs of buffaloes are expected to take part in Kambala. The event will be held in six categories such as Negilu (junior) section, Hagga (junior) section, Negilu (senior) section, Hagga (junior) section, Kane Halage and Adda Halage.

The winners of Kane Halage, Hagga and Negilu (senior) will be awarded 2 sovereigns of gold and runners-up will be awarded 1 sovereign of gold. Meanwhile, winners of the Adda Halage, Hagga, Negilu (junior) section will be awarded 1 sovereign of gold and runners-up will be awarded half a sovereign of gold.

The prize distribution ceremony will be held on March 7, which will be presided by Zilla president Meenakshi Shanthigodu. Mangaluru city Corporation commissioner Akshay Shridhar, Mangaluru Urban Development Authority chairman Ravishankar Mijar and others will take part.

Photography and drawing competition

A photography competition based on the theme of 'Mangaluru Kambala' is being held. Photographers need to take photos of Mangaluru Kambala, photos should be less than 200 MB in size. Photos should be uploaded on Instagram. The photos should be tagged Mangaluru Kambala with the hashtag #Mangalurukambala2021. The photos should be clicked and uploaded on social media on March 6. Those who are not available on social media can mail their photos to mangalurukambala@gmail.com.

The idea of conducting a photography competition is to attract youths in large numbers and to create awareness of the culture of Tulunadu and the Kambala sport.

Over 40 travel and tour operators also have been invited to Kambala to experience the sport so that they include it as part of travel plan for tourists.
