Udupi: St Mary’s College Shirva holds annual sports meet

Udupi, Mar 13: The annual Athletic Meet of St Mary’s College, Shirva was held on Wednesday March 10 at the college grounds.

Vijay Alva, was the chief guest for the programme. The programme was presided over by Fr Denies D’sa, the correspondent of St Mary’s College.

The Sports Day commenced with a beautiful march past by the students to the beats of a band. More than 450 students participated in the march past. Deekshith and Josita, the sports secretaries of SMC led the march past followed by flag hoisting by the chief guest.

Declaring the meet open, Vijay Alva in his address spoke to the students about the importance of sports and how it helps to develop courage and strength to face challenges. Drawing from his own experiences, he motivated the students to dedicate themselves to sports along with their curriculum.

An athlete, Josita Mendonca took the oath on behalf of all the participants.

The college choir group led the invocation. Principal, Dr Herald Ivan Monis welcomed the gathering. Jeff Sunny Dsouza, the Physical Education director proposed the vote of thanks. Melwyn Castelino compered the programme. Venugopal Nonda, former Physical Education director of the college and heads of sister institutions, teaching and administrative staff, sports committee members Premanatha were present.

Dr Herald Ivan Monis was the chief guest for the closing ceremony of the meet. The college flag was lowered by the chief guest and the meet was declared closed.
