Panaji, Mar 13: Shyamsunder Ramakant Naik, a well-known freedom fighter and social worker from Mapusa breathed his last on Thursday March 11. He was 88. He is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter.
Sources revealed that Naik initiated the Satyagraha movement against the Portuguese in Mapusa and shouted slogans. He was even sentenced to 12 years of jail after he was arrested by the Portuguese police. However, after the state attained liberation in 1961, he was released.
Naik was awarded by the President of India for his contribution to the state's freedom struggle of Goa. He later took up social work, and also played a key role in the development of the Mapusa-based educational institution, Saraswat Vidyalaya.
