Mangaluru: St Joseph Engineering College hosts GreenTech Hackathon awards ceremony

Mangaluru, Mar 25: The winners of the national level virtual event GreenTech Hackathon 2020 hosted by St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC) were felicitated in an awards ceremony held at the college. Shashi Kumar N, commissioner of Mangaluru city police was the chief guest on the occasion.

In an attempt to deliver technical and sustainable solutions to the existing local as well as community problems SJEC had organized this Hackathon to provide a platform for students to come together in creating and implementing novel ideas for a sustainable future. The event that was organized by the department of Civil Engineering at SJEC, in joint association with the SJEC-ISTE student chapter, attracted participation from colleges across India and the prizes were given away during the awards ceremony.

Dr Yajnheswaran B, head of the department of Civil Engineering welcomed the gathering following which Dr ESTR Chandra Sekhar introduced the chief guest.

In his address, Dr Rio D’Souza, principal of SJEC, spoke about the involvement of the college in solving issues faced by the community. He quoted the Pachanady waste disposal problem and said that realising the need to work with the community, the college has started working on the Care Pachanady movement by collaborating with NGOs and other institutions. He mentioned that the Hackathon was a platform to come up with the solutions to local problems and went onto say that the Mangaluru City Corporation has assured its support to implement the solutions emanating out of the Hackathon.

Mayuri R presented the report of the Hackathon. Alok Pinto, director of Amarante Shipping Pvt Ltd and Neelapu Srinivasa Reddy, deputy manager at JSW, who were the external judges of the Hackathon, virtually addressed the gathering.

The first place in the Hardware Edition of the Hackathon was bagged by the team from St Joseph Engineering College and the second prize was secured by the team from Cambridge Institute of Technology, Bengaluru.

The first place in the Software Edition was bagged by the team from Sri Sairam College of Engineering, Bengaluru and the second prize was secured by the team from St Joseph Engineering College.

The first place in the Open Track was bagged by the team from Akhil Bharatiya Maratha Shikshan Parishad's Anantrao Pawar College of Engineering & Research, Pune and the second prize was secured by the team from LBS Institute of Technology for Women, Trivandrum.

After the presentation ceremony, Shashi Kumar addressed the gathering and congratulated the college for coming up with such an innovative event during the pandemic. He said that the event garnering participation from across the nation is an indication of the credibility of the college. He mentioned that the planet requires sustainment and GreenTech Hackathon has been instrumental in developing sustainable solutions. He remarked that sustainment is very important to a city like Mangaluru and the solutions developed by the participants are sure to help the local community.

In his presidential address, Fr Wilfred Prakash D’Souza, director of SJEC, said that the college is committed to providing technical and sustainable solutions to the existing local as well as community problems. He mentioned that the GreenTech and AgriTech teams in the college have been striving hard to make SJEC a clean and green campus. He expressed his happiness at the college adopting 5 villages in its neighbourhood and providing them with technological solutions. He congratulated the entire organizing team for bringing out GreenTech Hackathon 2020.

Prashant Kurdekar, coordinator of the event, rendered the vote of thanks. Evita Coelho compered the programme.

Fr Rohith D’Costa and Fr Alwyn Richard D’Souza, assistant directors of SJEC and Rakesh Lobo, HR manager of SJEC, were also present on the occasion.
