Mangaluru: Cybercrimes rising - Police face huge challenge

Mangaluru, Mar 26: Dakshina Kannada district has been witnessing an upward swing in the number of cybercrime cases.

During the last 81 days, over 370 cybercrime cases were registered in the district. One among these cases involves an amount in excess of one crore rupees. This case may be entrusted to the criminal investigation department. At the same time, the mounting number of cybercrimes has posed a serious challenge to the police.

The modus operandi of a common cybercrime is getting introduced to strangers on Facebook, becoming friends, and then getting defrauded. In many cases, information about bank accounts are shared with others. A large chunk of those who get cheated are teachers, doctors, lecturers and other educated people. Cyber police also say that a good number of victims are women. Many of the crimes in the district also pertain to promise of employment, marriage alliance, giving gifts, getting introduced on the Facebook, editing of photos and videos obtained thereafter, and blackmailing the concerned.

In the year 2019, 122 first information reports were registered in the cyber police station. In 2020, 67 first information reports were registered while 1,025 non cognizable reports (NCR) were registered. In 2021, from January till March 22, 32 first information reports and 320 NCRs have been registered.

    Cyber thugs usually aim for the older age group who are not computer savvy. Religious priests, nuns are also most vulnerable for these attacks because it is easier to be-friend and cheat them. Also beware of religious groups and prayers that come on Social media. They may be created by cyber thugs for the purpose of collecting information from innocent people and later scamming them.

    I have a separate account in a different bank with debit card facility.My main account does not have debit,credit card or internet banking facility.I keep a small amount in this separate bank, before I go out of station I add money and remove it after coming back,so that in case of hacking my liability is minimal.If I get a phone call asking about personal details I just hang up.I do not even open emails from unknown people. Most of small shopping like grocery ,veg. etc by cash and larger amount by chq/DD. I do not use social media and WhatsApp.

    Yes.....cyber police should have been active when cases were registered at a low rate. Cyber police and mobile and sim companies should cooperate with each other. How come the details of our mob. numbers, our aadhar card leak? We give them to while taking sim, secondly we give to the banks, thirdly linked with gas ....who leaks our information? We get messages from different sources say for ex...hotels, products, finances, fake bank managers who speak hind ( their accent looks like north indian) ... etc etc.
