Karwar woman single-handedly digs 60-ft well, satiates neighbours' thirst

Karwar, Mar 29: When the country was under lockdown, and people had huddled together inside their homes, Gauri Naik (56) from Ganesh Nagar, Sirsi in the district, went out on her own and singlehandedly dug a 60-feet well and extracted water. She has achieved this feat not once, but twice. She had dug another well of the same depth.

Gauri can hold the rope and slide down the depth of the well easily within a fraction of a second. At a time when Sirsi town was hankering for water, its water sources and wells had gone dry. Gauri Naik dug a well with the desire to provide water to her neighbours, birds and animals. She dug the entire 60 feet well without anybody's assistance. Gauri's name now has become synonymous with altruism and sacrifice.

Two years back, she had dug 60 feet well in her own garden and was recognised for her undying spirit and steely resolve. She used to get up at 5 am and begin to dig the well. In the afternoon, she used to come up, have lunch and then get down to work. She has her relatives, children and others at her home, but she dug both the wells all alone.

Gauri's spirit and her desire to help others should be the guiding spirits for others. Such feats which feed water to people and animals are always welcome.
