Oversight or election driven hindsight: Priyanka to Sitharaman

New Delhi, Apr 1 (IANS): Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Thursday took a swipe at Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman for withdrawing the new interest rates on small savings announced by the government within 24 hours, questioning whether it was really an 'oversight' or election driven 'hindsight'.

"Really @nsitharaman 'oversight' in issuing the order to decrease interest rates on GOI schemes or election driven 'hindsight' in withdrawing it?" Priyanka said in a tweet.

Her remarks came after Sitharaman on Thursday said, "Interest rates of small savings schemes of government of India shall continue to be at the rates which existed in the last quarter of 2020-2021, i.e., rates that prevailed as of March 2021. Orders issued by oversight shall be withdrawn".

On Wednesday, the Finance Ministry had announced a sharp cut in the interest rates for small savings schemes by 50-110 basis points.

Congress National media in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala in a tweet also slammed the government and said, "Madam Finance Minister, are you running a 'circus' or a 'government'? One can imagine the functioning of the economy when such duly approved order affecting crores of people can be issued by an 'oversight'. Who is the competent authority referred in order?

"You have no moral right to continue as Finance Minister," Surjewala said.

The government withdrew its order slashing interest rates on small savings schemes, including National Savings Certificates (NSC) and Public Provident Fund (PPF), for the first quarter of 2021-22 within 24 hours of its announcement.

Such a big decision cannot be an oversight. It was definitely a decision with blessing from BJP leadership without any consideration for poor people. But some intelligent BJP peson might have pointed out the negative effect of this decision and asked for withdrawal. How can a Finance minister make such mistake and call it as oversight? Anyway, all must note that this is the action plan for future, immediately after the election. This is just to favour the big industrialists and RBI to bring interest rates down at the cost of hardship to poor. Ultimately if the last means of living for poor pensioners and senior citizen is also taken away with no effort to curb price rise, the nation will reject such politicians for ever. This is a worse decision than Currency ban but in smaller dose.

Exactly. This is a shameless Govt. The Govt remembers people only during elections. The Govt went on increasing Petrol/Diesel prices for months on a daily basis over last 5 years or so and after the current of Assembly polls were announced, the prices are being reduced in 10 to 15 paises. The Govt also raised LPG prices by some Rs 300 and has now reduced it by Rs 10. Again, the Govt announced slashing of all interest rates on small savings instruments by almost 1% even knowing the ordinary people depend on the these instruments for their savings and overnight withdrew the increase. Once elections are over, it will be back to the old routine. This is Maximum Government and less Governance. Sabka saath na-Vishwas!
