Mangaluru: KMC Hospital successfully treats malalignment of jaw structure

Media Release

Mangaluru, Apr 9: KMC Hospital, Mangaluru has successfully treated a patient with dentofacial deformity. 23-year-old Anjali, a doctor by profession, visited KMC hospital where she was referred to Dr Abhay Kamath and upon examination; she was diagnosed with facial asymmetry. After thorough planning, which also involved Virtual Surgical Planning (VSP), the patient underwent surgery for correction of her facial asymmetry.

Speaking about the case, Dr Abhay Kamath, consultant oral maxillofacial surgeon, KMC Hospital – Mangaluru, said “In medical terminology, this condition is called as a Class III prognathism. In such conditions, the patients face difficulty in carrying out basic operations as chewing your food. In Dr Anjali’s case, the lower jaw is placed a bit forward and the upper jaw is placed a bit backwards causing malalignment in the teeth structure. She was having difficulty in biting, chewing, speaking, etc., and experiencing pain in the bilateral temporomandibular joint, which connects our jawbone to the skull. We did a LeFort I Osteotomy for the maxilla (upper jaw) and the bilateral sagittal split osteotomy of the mandible (lower jaw) for the mandible to go back and the maxilla to come forward. The outcomes of these procedures make the patient have better competency of lips, alignment of the face, and makes the patient look much younger.”

Sharing her experience, Dr Anjali said, “Due to my underbite condition, I used to face many problems like having challenges in chewing my food, experiencing regular head-aches, experiencing regular bouts of pain in the mouth and face, etc. When I consulted Dr Abhay, he assessed my problem and assured me that my condition can be treated with surgery. The entire surgery took close to nine hours and it was very smooth and painless.

Post-surgery, the doctors and the staff were very proactive by continuously checking in on me and assessing my condition from time to time. It has been a smooth recovery and I am very thankful to the entire team of KMC Hospital, Mangaluru for taking good care of me. Now, I am able to speak, bite, chew, etc. normally without experiencing any pain.

Sharing his thoughts, Dr Anand Venugopal, medical superintendent, KMC Hospital, Mangaluru said, “We at KMC Hospital have a team to handle all complex situations or problems pertaining to face, mouth, and jaws. I would like to congratulate Dr Abhay Kamath and his team for successfully carrying out the surgery and making sure the patient is relieved from her pain."

The team led by Dr Abhay Kamath comprised of Vasudeva Das, Dr Y Aseel, Dr Amjad Ali, Dr Shreyasi, the anaesthesia team and the nursing team for providing holistic care to the patient post-surgery, there was a drastic improvement in the quality of life as well as restoring the patient’s self-confidence. KMC Hospital has a specifically designed craniomaxillofacial team led by Dr Abhay T Kamath, professor and head of the department, specialized in trauma, temporomandibular joint abnormalities, replacement and arthroscopic surgeries as well as correction of facial asymmetry/deformity, to handle all complex situations.
