Mangaluru, Apr 13: Due to inclement weather, a flight from Dubai which was to land at the international airport here, had to be diverted to Kochi.

The director of Kochi International Airport, A C K Nair, clarified that the Dubai-Mangaluru Air India flight was to land at Mangaluru international airport. As the climate at Mangaluru was not conducive for its landing, the flight changed its path and landed at Kochi, he stated.

The flight with 118 passengers was expected to touch down at Bajpe airport, Mangaluru, at 12.30 am on Tuesday April 13. But because of the fact that Mangaluru and surrounding areas were having thunderstorms then, the flight could not land as scheduled. It was diverted to Kochi.

The coastal belt has been experiencing cloudy weather with rain coupled with thunder at night since the last two days. Due to the drop in air pressure in the coastal and Malnad regions, clouds have formed. The meteorological department has issued a yellow alert till April 16 because of the possibility of heavy rainfall in coastal Karnataka.

First of all thanks to alert Pilot who took the correct decision to divert the flight due to bad weather in Mangalore. After that things were not at all good. No clear information on when the flight will be back to Mangalore even after the weather was good. We were only back to Mangalore at 11 AM on Tuesday. There was some briefing from some senior AI official where he mentioned that flight landed at 3 am with 180 passengers and departed from Kochi at 7:30 am. Not sure he had any idea of what happened with us. Flight landed there at around 1:15 am with approax 120 passengers and the departed for Kochi only at 10am. Bad weather was the reason for sure for this diversion but bad experience. Almost lost 1 extra day. It was sorry to see some co passenger who was coming for his father's funeral and no one to help.
