Mangaluru, Apr 13: Most of the schools and colleges run by the government normally face one or the other problem. There is a severe shortage of classrooms and it is common for the concerned to plead with the people's representatives to provide additional classrooms. But the children of a government college in Dakshina Kannada (DK) district have found a solution to this problem. They have collected things like coconut fronds, areca nut stems and other naturally available things from the villagers and created an eco-friendly classroom for the children who were sweating under the concrete building during the summer. For them, his new classroom has become a loved spot.

The students of Karnataka Public School at Keyyur in Puttur taluk have created this classroom. Keyyur PU College faces a shortage of classrooms like in many other schools. The students and lecturers have taken up the issue with officials and people's representatives. But grants take time as rules, regulations etc have to be followed. The students, who did not want to wait for long, got into work to meet the shortage of classroom. They got support from the college principal for this effort.

The principal drew up the plan of the room and the students did the rest. The local farmers donated things like poles and fronds free of cost for building the classroom. A green net has been used around the classroom to keep the inside cool. Coconut and areca nut fronds have been used to cover the roof.

This eco-friendly room has been used with the help of naturally available things. The room is big enough to accommodate two classes. The main aim of creating this room is to enable students to get the first-hand experience of using naturally available things and to meet the shortage of classrooms to some extent. The classroom has been created at a cost of Rs 10,000. As per the government estimate, for a concrete room of this size, Rs 23 lac would have been necessary.

The children like this classroom as compared to the concrete building as the atmosphere inside is cooler. At the same time, it also gives an experience of how our ancestors were studying.
