Covid second wave: Rahul Gandhi suspends all his political rallies in Bengal

New Delhi, Apr 18 (IANS): Amid massive Covid surge in the country, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has suspended all his political rallies in West Bengal and asked other political parties to think about the consequences of holding big rallies in the middle of the raging pandemic.

"In view of the Covid situation, I am suspending all my public rallies in West Bengal. I would advise all political leaders to think deeply about the consequences of holding large public rallies under the current circumstances," Rahul Gandhi said in a tweet.

In West Bengal, three phases of elections are still left to be held, but due to the Covid surge, there has been a demand to hold rest of the elections in a single phase.

India reported staggering 2,61,500 fresh Covid cases in the last 24 hours, the highest single-day spike ever, pushing the country's overall Covid tally to 1,47,88,109, according to the Health Ministry data released on Sunday.

This is the fourth consecutive day that the country has registered over 2 lakh Covid cases. India recorded 2,34,92 cases were reported on Saturday, 2,00,739 and 2,17,353 cases on Thursday and Friday respectively.

Meanwhile, as many as 1,501 people died of Covid in the last 24 hours, taking the country's death toll to 1,77,150 so far. The daily active cases tally rose to 18,01316.

A bad day for BJP. Rahul was bigger vote catcher for BJP than any other BJP leaders. More Rahul blames BJP and its leaders in any election rally there is a proportionate increase in the vote percentage in favor of BJP. From 2014, election Congress has never won a constituency except Mallapuram where Rahul has campaigned

Modi cares only on winning elections for BJP. He is the Prime Minister for India in title only. As he never had a family to support, he is totally clueless on how to take care of the 1.3 billion Indians.

RaGa has done numerous rallies, but Congress lost in all the constituencies where these rallies were held. So does not make a difference .The funds can be saved for future rallies for the same result.

Covid has become an excuse for so many non-performers - obvioulsy for the chief of them all Rahul Gandhi too. I might have believed what he says if he has addressed many rallies before the current peak of covid and if congress has won in the constituencies he had done rallies. But one thing: who wants to follow Rahul Gandhi's example, though he claims he is setting an example!

RaGa and Congress are not contenders in Bengal. So its a face saver exercise. Else situation in Kerala was much much worse all the while but he campaigned there. Same was the situation in Punjab but he instigated farmer protests. As it is Congress coffers are running empty, so RaGa and his candidates will not have to spend anything.

HAHAHAHA... this is as same as saying BJP will not campaign in Kerala & Tamilnadu due to Corona. If he was so concerend he shoul not have campaigned in lKerala which is the second highest infected State. Congress very well knows what will be the outcome in bengal for its party. They just want to save face in Bengal now and dont want to blame Pappu .

Sir, I'm not in support of any political party because I know how honest and good they are. Still I respect RG decision to cancel rallies.. He may not win any seats but surely created a good impression about himself. Good move appreciated..

Very good. Hope Modi follows. But the fact is that Rahul has nothing to lose there, Modi has only gains, sacrificing the safety of voters!!!
