M'lore: Gumtam Training Workshop at Kalaangann Inaugurated


Mangalore, Aug 3: The eight day gumtan training workshop conducted by Mandd Sobhann was inaugurated at Kalaangann, Shaktinagar here on Sunday August 1.

After inaugurating the workshop, theatre personality Kasargod Chinna described Kalaangann as a temple of art and culture. The workshop will be conducted up to Sunday August 8. The valedictory function will be held on August 8 at 6pm.

The participants at the workshop are presenting an opera using gumtan. The workshop is being conducted in the honour of late Joachim Pereira, known as king of Gumtan songs.

Chief trainers of the workshop Joel Pereira, gurkaar of Mandd Sobhann Eric Ozario and president of Mandd Sobhann Louis Pinto were present. Arun Raj, public relations officer of Mandd Sobhann compered the programme.

On the occasion, 104th monthly theatre too was held. Amogha Theatre group, Udupi presented two plays “Eklo Anyeklo “ and “ Karmadhin” . Both these plays were translated and directed by famous cine and theatre artiste Kasargod Chinna.

    Thanks Jossie, Am just returning from the link you gave. Too interesting I never thought the instrument may have a history from Maharashtra to Kerala.

    I wonder how many Gumats altogether may be in Karnataka, abandoned, not knowing how precious they are to the musical world.

    Indeed too generous of late Shri Jochim Pereira to have contributed so much towards this cause and now to Klalangan members to be doing it.

    Good effort by all. I was longing to see what a gumat may look like. Thanks to Kalangan for keeping our art & culture alive and taking interest in teaching them to today's generation.
