Mangaluru: Industrial waste released into Phalguni river - DYFI leaders, locals warn of protest

Mangaluru, Apr 23: Medium-sized industries along Baikampady, Jokatte and the SEZ corridor road have released large amounts of industrial waste into the Thokur lake that joins river Phalguni near Kuloor causing the water to get severely polluted. The water creatures in the river and fishes are dying due to pollution.

The wells of villages are also polluted that left people to go searching for clean water to drink. The pollution is causing people to grow concerned and anxious about an epidemic.

An organisation, Nagarika Horata Samithi led by the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) visited the spot upon receiving complaints from the locals. The Samithi also reached out to an officer of the Pollution Control Board. The officer, Keerthi Kumar visited various sources of polluted water, conducted an inspection and collected samples of water.

The Samithi requested the officials to identify the companies that are releasing waste into the water and take stringent action against them instead of giving assurances. The Samithi further warned of protests along with villagers if action was not taken.

DYFI state president, Munir Katipalla, Thokur gram panchayat president, Kevin Serrao, panchayat member, Aboobaker Bava, local leaders, environmental activists and others were present.

    When they set up these industries near the river, the authorities knew that the waste would be released into the river. As waste disposal involves expenses, these industries find a easier way by locating themselves near river and providing haftha to the authorities. The only way to deal with this that locals should unite and protest in a big way. They must stop these industries from operating.

    Think before you say this......The products that you consume are manufactured in some industry somewhere in India and at the cost of someone's environment. You expect the industry to be located elsewhere so that you can live peacefully and pollution free , whereas there are also people living in the place where the industry has been setup...... The only right you have to say this is when you stop consuming all industrial products including electricity , petroleum products , plastics , paints , food wrappers , cement , roads , bridges etc......Think about it.

    Wow, Sunil Mangalore, what a reply and what a mentality ! You think all polluting industries should be allowed to do what they want because we are using their products ? Industries should be allowed to dump chemicals in rivers and wells because they give us products ? If your argument is justified, then people who are disfigured by endosulfan have no right to justice. People who died in the Bhopal gas tragedy have no right because the company was producing products !

    Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) has to be approached. If you are specifically sure that there is an Industry responsible for this then ask for the records of Effluent Treatment plant (ETP). Records of treatment chemicals purchased for the ETP and the ETP process document have to be requested. Check for the effluent discharge records which mentions the various chemicals and their compositions being tested before releasing. It is KSPCBs duty to audit the ETP's and the factory Pollution Control equipment regularly. Also ask for the EIA (environment impact assessment) reports and what is mentioned in the EIA clearance when the factory was set up , what were the conditions of EIA clearance for the factory. These key questions and findings will help nail the culprits.

    Where is your FRIENDS MLA and MP which you elected and what is their role in this mishap !! This has to be controlled otherwise its a dangerous threat to the life !! MLA MP which they appears only in cutouts or nearby elections booths please catch a hold on them ! call them to the spot and let them swim in that water

    Everywhere same problems.Industrials are letting their water back to see instead of first workout so that no chemicals or wastage makes clean water not to poluted.Does any Industry should give a statement to the govt.how and what they do with wastage from Industry before giving a licence?Let them give a clear answer to this and what are they doing with it and map too.Making citizens sick and they enjoy money on other peoples health.No go.I saw also in a fish factory that wastage of fish cleaning water is led in open drainage to the sand banks .In mangalore.No wonder mosquitos are increased,Malaria and other diseases are increased in mangalore .
