EC 'most irresponsible institution' in country: Madras HC

Chennai, Apr 26 (IANS): The Madras High Court on Monday lashed out against the Election Commission and said "it is the most irresponsible institution in the country" who have done nothing to prevent political parties from breaching Covid-19 protocol.

The first bench of Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy while hearing a plea moved by state Transport Minister MR Vijayabhaskhar said: "You (EC) are the only institution responsible for the situation we are in today and You have been singularly lacking any kind of exercise of authority. You have not taken measures against political parties holding rallies despite the court saying "Maintain Covid protocol, maintain Covid protocol."

The court observed: "We assure you that we will stop counting if we do not find before May 2 a blueprint on how proper maintenance of Covid protocol is assured so that this state does not succumb to the idiosyncrasies any further."

The Chief Justice also observed that Public health is of paramount importance and that it was distressing to remind constitutional authorities on the counting and possibilities of a further surge after May 2.

The Tamil Nadu state transport minister had petitioned the court seeking direction to the Election Commission, to follow a slew of measures in ensuring fairness during the counting of votes on May 2 for Karur constituency where he had contested the elections as an AIADMK candidate. There were 77 candidates in the fray at the Karur constituency.

EC is a puppet of ruling govt & PM Modi,Entire mismanagement of Covid likely resulted from the interest of BJPto grab power through the elections.Sad for India where people are crying & begging for help. Dead bodies piling up. Doctors & Nurses are giving their life to save others, but govt does not care the suffering. they need only power.

Good decision by the courts, but why the court stopped in blaming the political parties they are responsible for holding rallies. Hope the courts in Delhi, Maharashtra, gujarat, Rajasthan, Karnataka etc. will have the guts to blame the political parties of those states which have highest covid cases which were not having elections.

Two of the EC top bosses themselves are COVID +. EC allowed political parties to campaign without any caution and the result is mass death. People were getting out gradually, but our politicians wanted to win and make money and EC supported them wholeheartedly . Still, EC will be shameless. It has become a habit to them. Now they will go to the Supreme court and SC will withdraw all strictures. Last week we saw what SC did with the UP high court judgment. It just put it in a waste bin and said wait for 7 days and slept on it.

Absolutely right that EC is the most irresponsible institution in country. They allowed political bosses to conduct elections as per their schedule and in many phases!!! West Bengal elections been conducted in 8 to 9 phases!!! Why??? They allow the rallies to conduct as per their schedule and radicalize Bengal for VOTES. Madras High court rightly OBSERVED and said IRRESPONSIBLE INSTITUTION" Officers must be held responsible for Covid spread. ACCOUNTABILITY IS NOT VISIBLE IN EC officers as they become puppet of Political Leaders.
