Mangaluru, Apr 28: The five-year rule of elected representatives of Dakshina Kannada zilla panchayat came to an end on Tuesday April 27. The first meeting of the previous zilla panchayat had been conducted on April 28, 2016, where its first president was elected.
Dakshina Kannada zilla panchayat, which had 36 members, has now gone up to 42 in the delimitation exercise. Ponnuraj, who is currently the n-charge secretary of this district, has been vested with the powers of running the zilla panchayat.
The zilla panchayat elections were planned to be held on time and the state election commission had made preparations. Delimitation of zilla panchayat and taluk panchayat constituencies had been undertaken and names of new constituencies were announced. As the state government has now decided against holding any of the elections for a period of six months, the elections have been postponed.
