Bantwal, May 3: Carmel College Modankap, here, won ‘One District One Green Champion’ Award by Mahatma Gandhi National Council of Rural Education, Union Ministry of Education, under Swachhta Action Plan 2020-21. Many universities, colleges all over India participated in Swachhta Action Plan.
In Dakshina Kannada District, Carmel College Modankap, Bantwal was one of the colleges to win ‘One District One Green Champion’ Award.
Carmel College Modankap, Bantwal has always taken initiatives to keep the campus and its surrounding area neat, clean, regular sanitization of campus in Covid-19 situation, thermal screening of every person at the entry gate, maintaining social distance norms, virtual meetings, disposal of dustbin bags on daily basis, displaying Covid-19 guidelines and messages on the campus, providing sanitizer to every visitor, and no entry without a mask.
Various programmes under Swachhta Action Plan and related activities were carried out by the college from time to time with a view to promoting Green Drive, garden management, maintenance, removal of weeds from the garden and use of organic fertilizers and bio-pesticides, herbicides for plants and trees on the campus.
The award was the outcome of concerted efforts carried out by the principal Dr sr Latha Fernandes AC, NSS volunteers under the guidance of NSS programme officer Madhura K, Deepthi Sweeni D'Souza, teaching and support staff and all students of the college in carrying out plantation drives and celebrating important days like Vanamahotsav, Earth Day etc. Preparation of eco-bricks is one of the important programmes carried out in the segregation of plastic. Eco brick information and fabrication programme was started with the aim of achieving a plastic-free campus and for the optimal handling of non-recycled plastic. NSS volunteers in their spare time engaged themselves in the preparation of eco-bricks and the collection of non-recyclable plastic waste. In addition, each class kept plastic bottles in their classrooms and used them as dustbins for plastics by inserting the plastic waste into those bottles.
As per the directive of the Ministry of Education, MGNCRE is awarding institutions for contribution to Swachhta Education and Practice. These are the 'One District One Green Champion' Awards which will be announced by the collector of the district. It is worthwhile to mention here, that the Swachhata rankings exercise under Swachhta Action Plan has been initiated by the department of Higher Education (under HRD ministry) to generate healthy peer pressure among higher educational institutions for keeping and maintaining hygienic campuses so that the environment for student learning becomes clean and leads to higher thinking.
