Spanish Monarchs Welcome Michelle Obama

Palma de Mallorca (Spain), Aug 9 (IANS/EFE): Spain's King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia, accompanied by Princess of Asturias Letizia, welcomed US first lady Michelle Obama and her daughter Sasha to a private luncheon before they concluded their vacation in Spain.

The wife and younger daughter of US President Barack Obama reached the Marivent Palace, the royal family's summer residence, shortly after midday Sunday after arriving by airplane from the southern coastal city of Malaga, where they had been vacationing since last Wednesday.

At the entrance to the palace, Michelle and her daughter were received by the king, queen and princess, who greeted and chatted with their guests before posing for a family photograph.

Crown Prince Felipe was not present at the luncheon because he was returning to Spain after attending the inauguration of Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos in Bogota.

After bidding farewell to her hosts, she is to return to the nearby Son Sant Joan airport to board the plane that will take her and Sasha back to Washington.

Sunday was the last day of the first lady's vacation after she and her daughter arrived last Wednesday in southern Spain with a group of relatives and friends and stayed at a hotel complex in the municipality of Benahavis, in the province of Malaga.

Over the past few days, the US group visited the Andalusian cities of Marbella, Granada and Ronda, and the beach at Estepona.
