Mangaluru: IPL cricket betting – Police arrest six bookies

Mangaluru, May 4: City Crime Branch (CCB) and Economic and Narcotic Crime police station officers and personnel have arrested six bookies who used to IPL cricket betting on mobile apps like Star App and Lotusbook247 in the bank accounts of Axis Bank, Karnataka Bank and HDFC Bank, which they opened in others names to which they used to collect betting money from punters online.

Police arrested Vikram Kumpala of city on April 21. Later they apprehended Dhanpal Shetty of Krishnapura, Kamalesh Surathkal (native of Rajasthan). After inquiry of Dhanpal and Kamalesh, the cops arrested main accused in the case Harish Sheety, native of Mumbai, Preethesh alias Preetham of Ashoknagar and Avinash Urwa Marigudi at Vishakhapatnam of Andhra Pradesh on April 30.

The police have seized nearly 20 bank accounts and confiscated Rs 20 lac cash in those accounts plus Rs three lac in cash. The cops also took into possession 10 mobile phones that were used for betting.

This operation was carried out under the direction of DCPs Hariram Shankar and Vinay Gaonkar of city police. CCB police inspectors Mahesh Prasad and personnel along with PSI Sathis MP and personnel of Economic and Narcotic Crime police station took part in the operation.
