Congress' poll performance unfortunate, disappointing: Sonia

New Delhi, May 7 (IANS): Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Friday termed her party's performance in the state assembly elections "unfortunate, disappointing and unexpected".

In the recently concluded assembly elections, results of which were declared on May 2, the Congress could not register win in any state, and its only consolation was in Tamil Nadu where the party contested along with DMK as its partner, and managed to win 18 seats.

Addressing the party MPs on Friday during a virtual meeting, she said: "Most unfortunately, our own performance in all the states was very disappointing and if I may say, unexpectedly so. The CWC is meeting shortly to review the results but it goes without saying that we as a party collective must draw the appropriate lessons from this setback in a spirit of humility and honesty."

Sonia Gandhi also congratulated Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

The Congress had on May 2 had said that the party will "study" the results, correct mistakes and do a course correction.

Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala read out a statement on the same day, and said: "The Congress will definitely study the results and all the reasons diligently and we are committed to correct our mistakes and do appropriate course correction."

"We recognize that the election results are not as per our expectations, particularly those of Assam and Kerala," he added.

Surjewala said the people's mandate is the final word in a democracy. "People of West Bengal, Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry have given their democratic mandate for the next five years. We accept the verdict with humility and a sense of responsibility."

If Congress really wants to revive itself - the Gandhi's must step back and limit themselves to only an advisory function and should not interfere in day to day functioning of the party. The oldies - Digvijay Singh, Salman Khurshid etc must go. At the moment, I feel only Captain Amarinder Singh, the 1965 war veteran appears capable to lead the party and become the new face of the party. Captain Singh is brave, does not mince words and can bridge the religious divide created by BJP. Tharoor and Sachin Pilot must be given greater share of authority and responsibility which has been denied so far.

Very Un fortunate. First congress to survive nominate some well versatile political legends within Congress to lead it (Party President /High Command) . At least next 5 years let Congress be without Gandhi surname.

Congress team is doing fine playing with 11 players legally without any help from technology. Whereas BJP is playing with 13 players as Pakistan used to play in Pakistan in late 79s with additional 2 umpires and with EVM technology. If you can stop this you are already a winner. Only proven losers play illegally.

BTW, did you win in Bengal elections after so much of covid violations, Faulty EVM votes and EC by your side???????. Do you see congress in TMC so TMC winning in Bengal is as good as congress has won. Congress wasn’t a aggressive campaigner in Bengal like BJP, firstly for people’s safety in election rallies during covid, secondly not to split votes between congress and TMC which will be gain for BJP. Only people with brains with eyes understand this logic. There is no faking here.

@Veer, Nagpur Understand a fact bjp have actually gained in wb elections. From 3 seats to being a major opposition in the country with 80 seats is a achievement. It is a knock for didi even tho she won the state. Bjp was no where in Bengal now they are something.

Wherever BJP lost they are gladly welcome wholeheartedly for recount/repolling of votes. No threats will be issued on any officials to murder and wipe thier family members if they order recount. No post election violence will be created and demand for president rule in those state where BJP lost miserably. Are you ready for the challenge and have guts BJP ‘Be A Man’. You are contended with your defeat because people have rejected you. No chance of resurrection by any avatars.
