As vaccines exported for 'image building', India saw 1L deaths: Sisodia

New Delhi, May 10 (IANS): Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Sunday accused the Centre of seeking to "buid its image" on the international stage with vaccine exports, instead of saving those dying in the country due to Covid.

Claiming that since March, India has exported around 6.5 crore Indian-made vaccines to 93 nations, Sisodia, who is also nodal minister for Covid management in the national capital, said: "While the people of the country were dying, struggling for beds, oxygen and medicines across the country, especially during the second wave of Covid pandemic with more than one lakh people having died since March this year, the BJP-led Centre was busy in image development and exporting Indian-made vaccines to foreign countries."

"Was it (export of vaccines) done just to improve the image of the Central government and earn accolades from some other countries? I request the Central government to vaccinate everyone in the country before exporting vaccines," the senior AAP leader said at a press conference here.

The mister stated that it is good to worry about the international community during the pandemic, but the countries like the US, Canada and in Europe are starting to arrange vaccines for their people first. Only France exported 1 lakh vaccines last month.

"The Centre has donated 6.6 crore since March. On April 22, when India had the world's highest number of 3.32 lakh cases, the Central government had also exported two lakh vaccines to Paraguay," Sisodia claimed.

Delhi wasted 6.15% of vaccine till 20th April. When Covaxin was given emergency clearance for restricted use in March 2021, the opposition parties criticized it terming it motivated urgency. Today Covaxin proved to be better vaccine. People even mocked Narendra Modi's visit to Serum Institute and Bharat biotech in January to see their preparedness, as a public stunt. Many full time Criticizers and buddhijeevis termed both the vaccines are unsafe and have side effects, creating fear among people. Hence demand was not there, vaccination centers did not get sufficient people for vaccination, hence producers did not ramp up production. Covishield is being manufactured by SII under licensing of AstraZeneca (UK Company), and as per Adar Poonawalla, under the licensing agreement, he is bound to export some vaccines. Very few people appreciated the government run ICMR and Private firm Bharat Biotech's effort to come up with indigenous COVAXIN. Hence we have 2 vaccines as of now.

Wasted : yes. Let me tell you how. The government allowed only above 65 to be vaccinated. 65 is the retirement age where people sit at home and say I don't have job or do anything why should I get vaccinated? Hence it got wasted Now how did the corona spread? From the working group who go out and meet people (not entirely by it but at least 50%) Had the govt allowed vaccination to above 18 from the start we would have halved this situation or already not wasted the vaccination.

It is because we exported vaccines meds that today whole world is helping India. State govts slyly passed on blame & responsibily to center. They could have easily established individual O2 units for hospitals costing just 30 lakh per plant but didnt. Center completed 34 out of 169 PSA plants in 4 months afer tender in Oct & transferred money to CMSS in Oct'20 itself

these people are just playing politics during national crisis..SIRUM institute producing vaccine with UK collaboration.. he has to follow contract of export for UK licensing obligation...also we are importing 80% vaccine raw materials, unless we aid (its not export. there is UN mandates for COVAX) how we import!!..we sent millions of Doses/tablets to ME countries, ask any Gulf relatives which vaccine they are provided by their host ME countries for free..majority its Covisheild (although there 3-4 alternative).. there are some ME countries where Indian population is more than their citizens..why these countries should look after Indians if we are not aiding them with medicines.. if we not provided Medicines/vaccines to others why they help us during our need!!

Right...we want to teach lesson america that can export vaccines to more than ninety five countries in cheap rate. It affect america much as had large stock of vaccines lying in there warehouses..as price is 100 times more. America/UK/EU thought by not giving raw materials to India can able to derail vaccination programme in India. We have capacity to do of our own and will try to prove it. Somewhat delay may happen.
