Chidambaram slams BJP for justifying Central Vista project

New Delhi, May 11 (IANS): Congress leader P. Chidambaram on Tuesday countered the BJP raising the issue of Central Vista project.

In a series of tweets, he said: "BJP spokesperson charges Delhi government with spending crores of rupees on advertisements without using the money for improving health infrastructure. Criticism justified."

"BJP government spending a small amount of Rs 20,000 crore for the Central Vista including a modest new house for the PM. Criticism unjustified," he said in another tweet.

Mounting an attack on the government on Covid management, in another tweet, Chidambaram said, "The three governing principles of pandemic management -- 1. Deny shortages of anything. If there are multiple media reports of shortages, deny more vigorously. 2. Test less people, report less new infections. 3. Bury numbers reported from cremation and burial grounds, report less Covid related deaths, report lower TFR."

Congress has been at forefront of criticising the Central Vista project in Lutyens Zone and has alleged that the BJP has lost its priorities and Congress is of view that same money should be spent for vaccination process and Covid management

The Congress working committee in its resolution on Monday had said that it expresses its revulsion at the shocking expenditure priorities of the Modi government. At a time when the nation's resources should be devoted to ensuring expansion of vaccination coverage and supply of essential medicines and oxygen, the Modi government is indulging in waste of money by continuing with the personal vanity project of the Prime Minister in the national capital. This is the height of callousness and insensitivity as also an insult to the people of the country."

Whatever Chidambaram and his son or his family are involved in is not the issue here. They could be corrupt, they could be bad or they could be anything. The report is about Chidambaram condemning Modi's decision to go ahead with the Central Vista project. I fully support all those who are against this ill advised project. The country is in the throes of a massive pandemic and this is in no small measure due to the irresponsible acts of the glorious Modi. When the scientists and experts had warned him in March about the impending crisis, this man turned a deaf ear to their advice and went ahead with the Kumbh Mela and the elections. The result is there for all to see. People all around us are dying, there is massive shortage of hospital beds and oxygen cylinders and we are by no means out of the woods yet. Probably the worst is yet to come. The country needs huge resources to overcome this crisis and what everybody including me asks is whether this project should go ahead at this critical juncture. What is wrong with the present building and where is the necessity to construct this new building. If reports are to be believed, the original map did not include the PM's residence but it was stealthily slipped in later. After all, it was a Gujarati firm that was awarded the contract to build this monument. Do chowkidars need to reside in palatial buildings? Chidambaram has hit the nail on the head and he has all the rights to question the wrong doing of this government. If he was found guilty, he has been sentenced to imprisonment and has cooled his heels in jail. Nobody has the authority to take away this right of Chidambaram to ask questions. Don't try to shoot the messenger.

If Mr Chidambaram and his son could return half the amount of bribe received by them, India could easily overcome the shortage funds required for fighting Covid 19. Further these two tongue politicians keep blaming the government for increase in unemployment. When government ploughs in money for various devolpmental activities, these unemployed politician raise objection by approaching the courts or issuing statement to press and media
