Udupi: Shirva cockfight raided - Two taken into custody, police involvement alleged

Udupi, May 20: The Shirva police raided the spot when a cockfight was in progress near Shirva Sorpu Sri Brahma Muggerkala Daivasthana. The cockfight was organised in violation of the coronavirus-induced lockdown rules. The police have confiscated several vehicles and taken two persons into custody during the raid on Wednesday May 18 evening. Six others fled from the spot apprehending arrest.

The arrested persons were Jaya Poojary (66) and Prasad Kutyar (38) from Moodubelle Kandiga. Sundar Atrady, Soorya Edmeru, Sudhakar Kadambu Moodu Mattaru, Wilfred William Gomes and two others succeeded in running away.

Rs 1,200 in cash supposedly used for the gambling, four cocks, cockfight knives, six motorbikes found at the spot, four other two-wheelers and a Ritz car were confiscated by the police personnel. A case has been registered in Shirva police station.

Police involvement

It is said that a personnel of Udupi district armed reserve (DAR) police had organized this cockfight (mobile katta) through WhatsApp. The locals are angry that some coronavirus infected persons participated in the cockfight. The owners of other vehicles are angry that the police dropped the name of the policeman who organized the cockfight and also released the Honda Activa scooter belonging to him after confiscating it along with others.
