Mangaluru, May 22: The detection of black fungus disease, in the midst of increasing cases of coronavirus, is causing concern in the twin districts.

Black Fungus disease is considered as a notified disease under column 7b of KPME act. Treatment for this is being given at Wenlock hospital of Mangaluru.

According to the information shared by district administration, black fungus infection is confirmed in seven people, while one person is suspected to have the infection. Two people have died of the disease in hospital. Surgery is conducted on two people. In the wake of this development, the health department had decided to keep special vigil on all coronavirus infected patients.

In a statement, Dr Rajendra K V, deputy commissioner of Dakshina Kannada said, “Public should not get scared by black fungus disease and adhere to all the coronavirus pandemic control guidelines and monitor their health. Specially, people who are in home isolation or got cured of Covid infection should contact the nearest health center if they find any pain on face or cheeks, bloody and foul smelling discharge from nose, tightness of nose, edema of pupil, redness of eyes or any defects of vision.

“Covid infected patients should follow precautions. Public should not get scared by any disease and follow the guidelines given by district administration from time to time and cooperate with the district administration,” he said.

There is shortage of medicine for patients suffering from black fungus in the district. Only Wenlock hospital has the medicine required to treat this dreaded disease. Officials say that they are getting demand for the medicine from private hospitals also.

After black fungus, there has been a sudden rise in white fungus cases (candidiasis), but this time it is presenting in disseminated form unlike localised form earlier! Although it's not as dangerous as black fungus, it's still risky if not treated early on! These guys do not know the seriousness of fungal & other infections in immunocompromised individuals; if they mantain the present complacency, a heavy price will have to be paid due to our crumbling health infrastructure!
