Mangaluru: Well-known photographer Denis Rego passes away

Mangaluru, May 22: Ace photographer Denis Rego of the well-known Denis Studio, passed away on Saturday May 22. He was 71. 

He was hospitalised three weeks ago and was recuperating in the ICU.

Denis was a known face in the world of photography in Mangaluru and Udupi. His photo studio, 'Dennis Studio' is located at Balmatta.

He was in the field of photography for 52 years inspiring many amateur photographers from the district. 

Dennis was the main photographer for numerous religious and educational institutions in the twin districts.

He is survived by wife Monica, daughter Miriam and son Daryl.

    It was a shock to here the sad news. I was blind for few minutes. Dennisbab is our family since 1980 . The quickness in taking neat pictures with attractive poses. nobody can challnge him in the locality. Clean in work and dialogues and loving personality. Dennis we miss you. He was an immensely talented person and a self made man who made a name for himself in his profession through sheer hard work and dedication.     What a co-incidence! Just yesterday I have gone through my wedding photo album to find some snap and within myself appreciated the quality of the photographs clicked by Dennis which still look so fresh after more than 34 years.     Denis Rego was one of the top photographers of Mangalore. In 80's he was the official photographer of the Bishop of Mangalore, many Religious houses, Educational institutions Raknno Konkani Weekly etc. Denis was very friendly in nature with a pleasant smile. He had a lots of friends and well wishers. I have a lost a good friend. My deepest sympathies to Monica, Miriam, Darryl and the bereaved family members. May his soul rest in peace.

    My first and only contact with Denis Rego was 20 years ago when I retired to Mangalore after 40 years in Bombay. I wrote a series of articles in Daijiworld covering Ash Wednesday, Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday to Easter. These articles needed visual support. Somebody suggested Denis Studio. Denis readily provided the required illustrations. My mission over, I returned to Denis Studio to pay for the photo prints. He said that he doesn’t charge for those who write on religious topics. Since then I have not met him till I read about his obituary in Daijiworld and his benign image revived the distant memory. May his soul rest in peace and may his bereaved family be consoled
