Pfizer too says no to Punjab on vaccine supply

Chandigarh, May 24 (IANS): After Moderna, another Covid-19 vaccine manufacturer Pfizer has refused to send direct vaccination to Punjab, citing its policy to only deal with the Central government, state Nodal Officer (Vaccination) Vikas Garg said on Monday.

He said the company, in a communication to the state, said: "Pfizer is working with federal governments across the world to supply its Covid-19 vaccine for use in national immunisation programmes.

"Our supply agreements at this time are with national governments and supra-national organisations with allocation of doses and implementation within the country being a decision that governments take based on relevant health authority guidance. This approach Pfizer has followed across the world," the pharma major said.

Garg said various vaccine manufacturers, including Sputnik V, Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson, were approached for direct purchase of Covid vaccines, as per the directions of Chief Minister Amarinder Singh to explore possibilities of floating a global tender for the procurement of the vaccines.

He said the reply from Sputnik V and Johnson & Johnson was awaited.

The state was forced to stop vaccination for Phase I and II categories in the last three days because of non-availability of the vaccine.

Punjab has so far received about 45.3 lakh vaccine doses from the Centre.

I blame only the central government for this. Having 35000 crores allocated for this vaccination, center has not spent that money on buying the vaccines for sure. Had they ordered 35000 crores worth vaccines at one go, then we would not have experienced shortage what we are experiencing now. In every aspects central government has failed because of their fake promises.

Totally agree with you Charles. Central Government behaved like 'Chindi Chor'. They thought they will use up the allocated 35k crore for horse trading and setting up new statues or make up for the losses of GDP. However God had different plans. 4 days of realizing the second wave has struck, government surrendered itself and put the responsibility on state governments to procure the vaccines as if the state governments are buying vegetable and fruits from market. Now vaccine situation in India is like ' Jenji la ijji, Jenjig padna kai la ijji'. 90% have received vaccination because nor does central government have vaccine nor state government. About 3-4 % have received only first dose. Lot of them have received first dose with AstraZeneca and second dose with COVAX. So there is a cocktail of vaccines.
