Bengaluru: Veteran freedom fighter, centenarian H S Doreswamy passes away

Bengaluru, May 26: Veteran freedom fighter H S Doreswamy died on Wednesday May 26 in the city. He was 103.

Doreswamy was suffering for heart ailment and age-related sickness. He died of heart attack. Doreswamyalso tested positive for Covid on May 6. But he recovered without the need of an oxygen bed also. He was discharged from the hospital on May 13. However, after four days of getting discharged, the veteran freedom fighter had to be admitted to hospital. He was having various health issues including heart ailment, high blood pressure and Bronchitis.

Doreswamywas admitted into the Jayadeva hospital of the city after he developed breathing problem eight days ago. He was repeatedly saying that he will not get admitted to the hospital as he is old and asked the family members to allow the bed meant for him to be utilized for the treatment of young people. However, Dr Manjunath of Jayadeva hospital convinced Doreswamy that there is no shortage of beds and got him admitted to the hospital.

Govt to accord State Funeral, honours to Doreswamy

The State Government has decided to accord the honour Doreswamy.

The State Funeral will be held with minimum police men taking part and salute by following all the Covid norms, said an official government order issued on Wednesday.

CM, DCM & Ministers mourn H S Doreswamy’s demise

Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa has mourned the death of Doreswamy in Bengaluru on Wednesday.

“Doreswamy was a multi-faceted personality and he was active in the public life espousing several pro-people movements,’’ the Chief Minister said.

Yediyurappa lauded Doreswamy for being a disciple of Mahatma Gandhi and a firm believer in his ideology and he was one of the last links with the father of the nation in Karnataka. He also worked tirelessly for the unification of Karnataka and was a simple personality.

Deputy Chief Minister and State Covid Task Force Chief Dr C N Ashwath Narayan recalled that Doreswamy recovered from Covid infection due to his sheer will power and was recently discharged from hospital.

Despite being a centenarian and frail personality, Doreswamy believed and supported several public issues and his was a voice of reason. He was always active, Dr Narayan said.

Home and Law Minister Basavaraj Bommai described Doreswamy for his social service and his death is a big loss for Karnataka and Kannadigas.

Mining and Geology Minister Murugesh R Nirani has also expressed his deep sense of shock at Doreswamy’s death and eulogized the veteran freedom fighter for his tireless work in support of public causes.

Nirani said Doreswamy’s life and work were a role model for the younger generation and he always fought for the cause of Kannada.

    He fought for the nation, until his last breath he had a great concern for his fellow citizens, youngsters & towards his country. A noble / unselfish man. A true freedom fighter, a great gentleman. May his tribe increase in millions. God almighty has blessed him with long life. I am sure the heavenly angels are eagerly waiting to welcome him. May his soul rest in peace.
