Mangaluru, May 26: Officials of Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) demolished the old Central Market building here on Wednesday May 26.

It is said that the old building was demolished to construct a new building. Following the coronavirus enforced restriction, the old market building was partially open.

The police and excavators took part in the demolition process. Barricades have been now placed in and around the market by police officials.

Speaking to the media, MCC commissioner Akshy Sridhar said, "A resolution was passed in the MCC council to clear the old Central Market building. A proposal under the Smart City project to build a new market was sent to the state government. The government had approved the project on April 22 of last year. As there was a stay order issued from the court, the old resolution was withdrawn and another notice was issued to vendors. Time to respond to the notice was also provided to the vendors. As per the direction from the court, after hearing the vendors side of the argument, cases were disposed of."

The MCC commissioner then stated that a new resolution was passed in the council which was also forwarded to the government. "Yesterday, we got approval from the state government, which is why today we have started the demolition process. We will hand over the area to the officials of the Smart City project. After clearing the debris, construction of the new building will begin. Vendors can collect their products on Thursday May 27 between 6 am to 9 am," Sridhar said.

Why isn't anyone talking about Urwa market ?? It has been well over a year since the completion of the new market building but the building isn't functional yet. The temporary market is unsanitary stinky and almost impossible to maintain social distancing there . I would like to request the public to pressurise the local corporator and Mayor and MCC commissioner to to do the needful at the earliest .

Dear Sir Demolishing and constructing a new market under the smart city scheme is a good idea provided if it is constructed with proper planning especially movement of people inside the market, parking, movement of lorries and entry and exit. One more aspect is quality of construction as also movement of air and sunlight be kept in mind so that the people ibside the market feel comfortable. Hope there will be no politics in awarding the tender for construction...

Its a good indicaton and sign that a new market complex will come up soon. But see the fate of the Urwa market. Though the market building come up one and half year back its a tragedy it has not yet started functioning. Money, time everything is being wasted. And it is not known the fate of this Central Market Building.?

As all aware, its lockdown in Mangalore. During lockdown even construction work is probited. None of MCC work is done within span of time. Suprised immediate after obtaining approval, taking the benefit of lockdown, demolition work has been executed by violating lockdown covid guildlines. Sure there is political move and gain behind this, which is supported my MCC. Yes, its very old market, sure requires good central market in that area. Till, market gets ready, MCC would have given alternate place in hampankatta for vendors doing their business and it would have helped public rather than going baikampady. Understand from video clip from opposition, which is under circulationin socialmedia, no prior information has been provided to vendors.

I sincerely trust that our Authorities who wish to see a Well Planned and built Market for " The People of Mangalore " to last for a good generation will be seen at that prime location. May be, it may take some reasonable time to construct, taking into consideration the need of our time now. If it is done that way, by and large, there will be a cause of appreciation for the part of our able Authorities. All people will remain grateful to all of them, praising them always when they step in and step out of the place. Because, we loved to visit that prime location always with a smile ! Ben D'Souza Prabhu - a real lover of that prime Market place !!

P V Narasimha Rao's government brought the LPG, ushering in a new era. Many things did change. However, along with it corruption also increased, Everything is profit based. Now the question of smart city in Mangalore. Funds are plush. It is therefore everything has been dug. Whatever, vacant land is allotted with one or the other/ or a building. Mind you, it is not to develop Mangalore at all. There are funds. There are contractors. There are kickbacks too. Our leaders are of the opinion that, "make hay when the sun shines". Therefore, dig everywhere and build whatever, useful or not is not the issue but funds are there. I am of the opinion that, public leaders like, MLAs, MPs, Mayors and Corporators should be held responsible for these funds. Even if they are not in position, just if they are living people should file cases on them if people find discrepancy in using the funds. It will be one good thing we citizens should do to stop this corruption in our country.

People, If smart city planners have a little brain ( Chicken brain) in their head...they should build enough parking space for vehicles....since they don't have open air space around ...they must build a building with at least 4-5 Basement level parking's so about 1000 vehicles could park who come for shopping.... Also give priority to the merchants who already had shops in old Central market buildings... Build enough toilets and provide clean facilities....when private malls could maintain clean atmosphere why not Government markets???... ...Tak...Takk...

KINDLY REQUEST THE MCC OR SMART CITY TO PUBLISH THE NEW MARKET BUILDING PLAN FOR THE INSPECTION OF PUBLIC AND CALL FOR IDEAS OR CHANGES THROUGH THE CORPORATORS BECUASE IT WILL HAVE A LIFE SPAN OF NEARLY 50 YEARS . THE DATE OF COMMENCEEMNT AND DTAE OF COMPLETION MUST BE ABNNOUNCED IN PUBLIC AND PUBLISHED AT THE CONSTRUCTION SITE . IT SHOULD NOT BECOME LIKE PUMPWELL OR THE NEW DC OFFICE NO TIME LIMITS ETC.
