Kuwait, Aug 23: Title contenders AVC Kuwait narrowly beat a strong Surra Boys 1-0 in the St Francis Xavier Unity Soccer Cup (SFX Unity Cup) at the Digital Ground (Kuwait City) here recently in the first match of the day.
The all important goal was scored by Jimmon from 20 yards past the diving Surra Boys keeper. AVC Kuwait possessing players of the caliber of Luciano, Braulio, Melwin, Kavin and Ronnie were made to work hard for victory by Surra Boys made up of a selection of reputed players including Duarte who controlled the midfield, Liston in the defense and Savio, Anil and Larry.
In the second match of the day, Duler Boys edged out Rawda Challengers 4-1 in the tie breaker. Although Duler Boys controlled most of the game with Ian as a pillar in the defense and Terence controlling the midfield, they were unable to find the net due to erratic shooting by their forwards. Ian, Cookie, Reji and Terry found the net for Duler Boys, while the Duler keeper Benny was in fine form saving two penalties. Shakir was the only scorer for Rawda Boys. Matches were officiated by Indian Football Referees Association (IFRA) officials - Sharma, Christoper, Alex, Amaldo and Diego.
In the matches played on Friday, star studded Livrament Boys scraped through 1-0 past a young Don Bosco Oratory, with Jimmy finding the net in the second half. Livrament Boys fielding the elite of Indian Soccer including Jimmy, Vico, Vitorino, Kennedy, Cristo, Bernard among others, in spite of their reputation found it extremely hard going against a young and skilful Don Bosco Oratory and Roshan, Sai, Alex and Louis ensured that Don Bosco were in the hunt as well. Matches were officiated by (IFRA) officials - Steven, Tiego and Jose.
In the second match, CRC Chinchinim won 3-1 in the tie breaker against Indian Strikers after the match had ended in a draw. Seby, Venencio and Lesley scored for CRC while Biju was the only one who found the net for Indian Strikers.
The finals of this 8-a-side tournament are scheduled for September 9, the first day of Eid and the organizers have promised numerous prizes including gold biscuits for the winners and runners-up, besides prizes for fair play, upcoming player, promising player, best player of the tournament, oldest player, highest scorer and first goal of the tournament among others. More prizes will be announced in the coming weeks.
Upcoming first round matches: On 26/8/2010 (Thu), SFX v/s United Goans at 5:00pm and
DHL v/s Curtorcares United at 5:30pm.
On 27/8/2010 (Fri) – Quarter finals: United Friends Club will take on AVC Kuwait at 5:00pm,
while Sky Net Raiders will play Duler Boys at 5:30pm. All players are requested to report
on time.
