Choksi slips away from India's clutch again

New Delhi, Jun 4 (IANS): After a Dominican High Court adjourned the hearing in fugitive businessman Mehul Choksi's case, the eight member team of CBI, ED and MEA are now en route to India, without the diamond jeweller that duped millions in the PNB multi-crore fraud.

The next hearing has been adjourned in the matter to June 14.

According to agencies sources, the private Qatar jet left from Dominica on Thursday along with the eight member team of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Enforcement Directorate, Ministry of External Affairs officials and two CRPF commandos.

The team of Indian officials had landed in Dominica on Saturday with a set of documents relating to the case of Choksi.

On Thursday, Dominican High Court Judge Bernie Stephenson adjourned the habeas corpus hearing of Choksi, who is wanted in India in the Rs 13,500 crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case.

According to Antigua News Room, a news outlet based in the Caribbean island, it was adjourned to allow lawyers for Choksi and the Dominican government to agree on the language to be used with respect to the injunction filed to prevent his removal from Dominica.

It said that both parties are expected to meet to discuss the matter and to inform the judge, who will set a new court date.

Choksi, who is wanted in India by the CBI and the ED in connection with the PNB fraud case, had gone missing on May 23 from Antigua sparking a massive manhunt. He was captured in Dominica on May 26.

Choksi and his lawyers had claimed that he was forced on a vessel and was abducted.

On June 2, Choksi pleaded not guilty to illegal entry at his court appearance and was denied bail.

He appeared before the magistrate on a wheelchair in a blue T-shirt and black trousers.

According to Dominica News Online, the magistrate's court denied bail to Choksi after the government prosecutor argued that he was facing 11 offences in India and extradition proceedings in Antigua and could be a flight risk.

The 62-year-old left India in January 2018, days before the CBI registered a case.

On May 27, first pictures of Choksi emerged online, showing several signs of bruises on his arms and a swollen eye.

Looks like a drama. Is there sense in Indian officials going there with documents. There must be embassy of Antigua and Dominica in Delhi and vice versa. Even if their offices are not there by the virtue of being tiny island countries, Indian officials of CBI, ED going there looks fishy. Mind you it is a legal issue. Not like catching Veerappan !! Therefore, it is suspect.

Episode No.11 and this chowkidar-chor imaginary story continues to entertain and fool people. Thanks to Nagpur App University for constant updates on this story. Just the other day he has been beaten black and blue allegedly by Indian agents and today he slips away, how it’s possible and why Indian CBI etc team should go to Antigua without Antiguan authorities intimating the Indian embassy that the fugitive Chowksi is under thier custody with all documents furnished and can be extradited. If not CBI should show the documents from Antiguan authorities to go to Antigua for the same purpose.

Free vacation for the 8 member team from CBI, ED and MEA. Please deduct the flight, hotel and other expenses from their salaries. The rest of India were already aware that BJP has made it nearly impossible for Mehul Choksi to be brought back to India and all this is an exercise to try and fool the public.

I fully agree with you sunil that this is a vacation for the team who had gone to bring them back at state expense. Getting the custody of an accused from those countries is next to impossibility. Modi and Co is known for publicity, nothing else. Now, vijay mallya, lalit modi etc neednot waste their time in searching for a lawyer, Harish Salve already settled in London after his remarriage, they can contact him easily

Modi said he will bring back black money, mallya, nirav modi, mehul choksi from abroad but he is not able to bring back none. I will strongly feel that he will ever be able to bring back them. They are one step ahead of indian govt, forget above the loam amount they have taken from the banks, the govt has spent lakhs of rupees in trying to bring back them but they will never be brouht back.
