Kolkata, Aug 24 (IANS) West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee Tuesday inaugurated Kolkata's first cyber crime police station set up with technical support from software giant Infosys Technologies.
Speaking on the occasion, the chief minister said the opening of the cyber crime police station at the police headquarters at Lalbazar was a big step in providing the city knowledge-based policing.
"This will improve the police's efficiency and standards in combating cyber crime," he said.
The police station has been set up in the detective department building at the headquarters and people can directly lodge complaints of cyber crime here instead of going to local police stations.
People can also register their complaints through e-mails.
Home Secretary Samar Ghosh said the state government planned to set up more cyber crime police stations. "We may have such police stations in each police division of the city," he said.
The chief minister also inaugurated a hi-tech control room including AVTMS (Automatic Vehicle Tracking and Monitoring System), DCRMS (Distress Call Response Management System), ATCS (Area Traffic Control System) and CPPSS (Critical Public Place Surveillance System).
The new control room will help in monitoring traffic movement at important intersections from the headquarters. Tabs can also be kept on the whereabouts of all police wireless vans.
Traffic signal violations will be automatically recorded and intense vigil can be kept on seven important buildings, including the state secretariat.
Infosys Technologies founder chairman N.R. Narayana Murthy said computers can create data and help in accessing, processing and transforming them into information.
"If this is considered to be the input, then the result is that computer makes people efficient, conquer distance and improve quality of life," he said.
He said that the new technology will "definitely enhance the quality of crime detection of Kolkata police".
