If vaccines are free, why should pvt hospitals charge for them: Rahul to PM

New Delhi, Jun 7 (IANS): Hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced free vaccination for all above 18 years of age, former Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Monday questioned him saying if vaccines are free for all, why should private hospitals charge for them.

"One simple question - If vaccines are free for all, why should private hospitals charge for them?" Rahul Gandhi, who is a Lok Sabha MP from Kerala's Wayanad said in a tweet. He tweeted with the hash tag of #FreeVaccineForAll.

The Prime Minister announced that all Indians above 18 years of age will be administered free Covid-19 vaccine from June 21. Addressing the nation on Monday, the Prime Minister made it clear that the states will be provided these vaccine doses free of cost by the Central government.

"The government of India will provide free vaccines to the states from Monday, June 21, in every state for all citizens above the age of 18 years," Modi said. The Prime Minister said that the Government of India will buy 75 per cent of the total vaccine production from vaccine manufacturers and give it free to the state governments.

Modi also said that 25 per cent of the vaccines being made in the country will be provided directly to the private hospitals where they will be able to charge a maximum service fee of Rs 150 for a single dose after the fixed price of the vaccine. "The task of monitoring it will remain with the state governments," the Prime Minister added.

RG needs to understand that private hospitals are buying vaccines directly from the manufacturers just as any other medicines. Vaccines to private hospitals are not supplied by the government. Vaccines supplied for Govt. Hospitals are being paid by the Central Govt. which are available freely to the public.

Pvt hospitals certainly have their overheads to cover. Instead of doctors giving it for a higher let the nurses give it for a lower fee. it is a simple procedure and we do not need the doctors expertise.

Because BJP leaders are guardians of pvt hospitals. So, naturally Hafta needs to be paid to them.

Private hospital is not Nehru family property to give free. They have to pay doctors salaries. You have problem with everything.

Neither Rahul Gandhi nor the state or Central government pay the salaries of Nurses or Doctors working in a private hospital. It is a company or trust or an individual who run private hospitals. They do not print money to pay salaries of the employees who are used for vaccination purpose. So please understand they have to collect some service charges for salaries, needles, and other associated expenses involved in Vaccination process. Please do not blindly support Rahul Gandhi, who doesn't know what he talks.

Rahul is right. The government must make vaccines available to the private hospitals free of cost as well and patients should not have to bear anything over Rs 150 for the convenience. Otherwise it will lead to black marketeering and/or hoarding of vaccines.

That's exactly what everyone is asking. Government says it's free....Private hospitals are charging+ hospital charges. Every hospital has it's own price depending on the make. Gol Maal hai bhai..sabb gol maal hai.

They were getting their salaries before the pandemic and will continue to get even after. For the additional work of vaccination, they are allowed to collect Rs 150/jab and that's more than enough.

Before the pandemic ,they had too many patients ..Because of Pandemic the patient count has reduced for other treatment ..Somehow they have to balance and pay their salary .If some rich congress person wants to go to a private hospital by paying money ..why not ..its his or her choice ..many people here do not visit govt public health centers for lack of confidence
