Chennai, Aug 28 (IANS): AIADMK chief J. Jayalalithaa Friday charged Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi of encroaching upon land that belonged to the Chennai Corporation.
Announcing an agitation by her party Saturday against the encroachment, Jayalalithaa said: "After becoming the minister for public works in 1967 Karunanidhi encroached upon 780 sq feet of land behind his Gopalapuram residence that belonged to Corporation of Chennai."
She said when the issue was raised, it was stated that Karunanidhi had paid a fine and also got the fine refunded.
According to her when the issue was raised by the government headed by her, Karunanidhi said the government was free to demolish that part of his residence.
Jayalalithaa said the party will also agitate against DMK's failure to hand over land near its headquarters to the civic body as per building regulations.
She said as per Chennai Corporation rules when a construction of more than 10,000 sq.ft is made, a portion of the land should be handed over to the civic body for a park.
When the DMK headquarters was built the required land was not handed over to the Chennai Corporation but the party said it would maintain the park by itself. But the land is now used as a parking lot, she said.
