Islamabad, Aug 28 (IANS): A gunfight broke out Saturday morning between militants and security forces near the US consulate in Pakistan's northwestern Peshawar city, media reports said.
An office of the security forces was attacked, but the motive was not immediately clear, Dawn reported citing the police. The US consulate is located nearby.
Troops immediately cordoned off the area, said Dost Mohammed, a police official.
Peshawar is the capital of troubled Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
Xinhua reported that the firing started at around 6.00 a.m. and was continuing.
The shooting began hours after suspected US missiles struck two vehicles, killing four militants in Kurram tribal region bordering Afghanistan. The slain militants were from the Taliban's Haqqani network, officials said.
