God did Not Create Universe: Stephen Hawking

London, Sep 2 (AFP): God no longer has any place in theories on the creation of the Universe due to a series of developments in physics, British scientist Stephen Hawking said in extracts published Thursday from a new book.

In a hardening of the more accommodating position on religion that he took in his 1988 international best-seller "A Brief History of Time", Hawking said the Big Bang was merely the consequence of the law of gravity.

"Because there is a law such as gravity, the Universe can and will create itself from nothing. Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the Universe exists, why we exist," he writes in " The Grand Design", which is being serialized by The Times newspaper.

"It is not necessary to invoke God to light the blue touch paper and set the Universe going," added the wheelchair-bound expert.

Hawking has achieved worldwide fame for his research, writing and television documentaries despite suffering from motor neurone disease since the age of 21 has left him disabled and dependent on a voice synthesizer.

In "A Brief History of Time", Hawking had suggested that the idea of God or a divine being was not necessarily incompatible with a scientific understanding of the Universe.

But in his latest work, Hawking cites the 1992 discovery of a planet orbiting a star outside our own Solar System as a turning point against Isaac Newton's belief that the Universe could not have arisen out of chaos.

"That makes the coincidences of our planetary conditions -- the single Sun, the lucky combination of Earth- Sun distance and solar mass -- far less remarkable, and far less compelling as evidence that the Earth was carefully designed just to please us human beings," he wrote.

Hawking argued earlier this year that mankind's only chance of long-term survival lies in colonizing space, as humans drain Earth of resources and face a terrifying array of new threats.

He also warned in a recent television series that mankind should avoid contact with aliens at all costs, as the consequences could be devastating.

    hello everyone.
i m not a scientist or astrologer. just i want to say is the meaning of creation. is created by some one, otherwise there is no meaning of creation, and for creation there must be some one to creat, so, in my view strongly i say that has created all the univeres.

thank you. in the name of lord jesus christ.

Whatever comes out of Stephen Hawking is coming out of an indipendent mind, scientific intelligence though, it's upto one wether to believe in it or not. However, our repeated quoting of God's creation is nothing but what we were made to believe and take comfort in our protective cocoon - Scared to enquire!!!

This Hawkings has gone intellectual bankruptcy. All scientists intially say there is no God, but when they ge t old they start visiting church/temples/masjids to repent and seek spiritual purification. Without God there is no science and God is knowledge and Can this scientist give me an answer to my simple question, why the children born to same parents, differ is colour, stature, nature, temperment and of course in health and wealth?/ Does any one has an answer except God??????

Stephen, your brain is material or substance (which can be seen) and is physical. How come your little brain can absorb truths on God. Can you think beyond universe and beyond time. Who is the prime mover ? God or human being ? For sure someone has moved in order to move. Read Aristotle theory. Do you reply on big bomb theory ? Your theory is subjective and one sided. You reply on physicals and why not go beyond and learn metaphysics. Good for you instead of becoming materialistic.

With all respect to Mr. Hawking I must say this is out of the ordinary and going little too far in science.

Let me say without GOD or Supreme power nothing exists even the earth itself and the unversal nature.
