Hassan: Two sisters die 17 days apart, parents allege dowry harassment

Daijiworld Media Network – Hassan (MS)

Hassan, Jun 27: In a heart-wrenching incident, two sisters, both of who were married, ended their lives within 17 days of each other. Their parents have alleged that they were harassed for dowry by their respective in-laws and cases have been filed in this regard.

Aishwarya (19) and Saundarya (21), daughters of coffee estate labourer Uday, a resident of Belagodu village of Sakleshpur were found dead on June 8 and June 25 respectively.

Uday has four daughters. The second daughter, as per the complaint, allegedly killed herself by hanging at her husband's house at Tumakuru. Within 17 days of her death, the elder daughter also died under mysterious circumstances at her husband’s house at Hosanagara. Two other daughters are studying in PUC and SSLC.

Soundarya was studying for a degree in journalism in the women's first grade government college in the city. It is said that she had no intention of getting married. Later her younger sister Aishwarya was married off to Nagaraju, a resident of Kaveripura of Kunigal taluk of Tumakuru last year. Nagaraju was working in petrol pump and resided at Saraswatipuram of Tumakuru city.

Elder daughter Saundarya had married Umesh, a resident of Kadiggeri of Karimane gram panchayat limits. It is said that elders in the family were against the marriage.

Aishwarya was found in a hanging position at her husband's house on June 8. The parents have filed a complaint that her in-laws were torturing her for dowry.

Soundarya also died by hanging at her husband’s house on June 25. Her parents wanted to cremate her in front of her husband's. They also sought police protection, however, the police did not pay heed to their request.

Uday, father of deceased, accused Soundarya's in-laws of torturing her mentally and physically and murdering her by tightening rope around her neck and later hanging to the fan.

The complaint accuses her husband Umesh, his father Panduranga, mother Shanthamma and sister Roopa as the culprits. In the complaint it is said that Saundarya was tortured as she is from another caste and the family also intended to get Umesh married off to someone else.

We are always reading news of dowry deaths, but nothing about any punishment given to the people who torture or murder them. Are they getting any punishment in our judicial system?

Shocking to hear both married sisters died within short period, allegedly due to Dowry harassment.IS it possible both sisters within short period died.?shocking to parents to loose both of them that too harassment from husbands side.I ask first why did parents got them married off in such a young age. They were almost in teenager age.Why dont allow them to educate and decide their own lifeas mature girls?Nowadays girls decide them selves when finished their education. Now no need of blaming husbands relatives or husbands.Atleast now learn from your mistake that other two may education to complete and get marry as per their wish when they feel.Dont push them to someones throat.First choose a boy who is decent enough not to harass because of Dowry.second if possible let newweds let seperate home ,so that his mother or sisters trouble them. One word to girls, please choose your partner one who doesnt demand dowry .take it written. Here who were responsible for their death should be investigated and punished.May their souls rest in peace.

Never get ur kids married of at a early age.. if a girl is financially independent then she has atleast little liberty to decide for herself if she wants to get married or not.. On the other hand girls you should give importance to education urself.. even if u choose ur partner if he is not right u can walk of on him of u are financially independent..

OMG .... this is heartbreaking. why do parents want to get their daughters married off at such a tendere . Educate them, let them be independent and settle when it is their right time. The girls look so immature and fragile . am sure they were not in a position to save themselves from the clutches of the unnatural death that they were forced into. The parents also are partly to be blamed for this incident.

Its so sad these two girls died at such a young age. I am sure they must have suffered /endured so much of pain/anguish at the hands of in-laws/husband & their kin. they must be jailed for life....all those who caused this death. My only request to Men who marry, if you are not man enough don't get married and if you get married it is your responsibility to look after your wife/family. Also it is noticed in many households girls coming from lower income /caste backgrounds get ill treated and husband turns his head away. He becomes a silent spectator when wife gets ill treated/abused in the hands of mother/father/sister and other relatives. this is a major crime in society and in the eyes of divine. Its sad that any educated man must think, whatever life he has he must spend happily with wife/children, take care of them and protect them. And anyone going for dowry is the lowest of lowest in humanity. Sadly no one in the society raises finger on this issue. And this is what leading to such tragedies. Govt /Courts must protect these families from atrocities and cruelty. there should be immediate action taken against anyone who is a culprit. Its sad these days youngsters from across all castes eye for dowry, girls must reject these idiots. Boys and their family members must remember that parents of girls take immense pain and sacrifice to bring up girls and give them education and make them literate. What more boys need in life? Money/car/bunglow from girls parents??? Such boys and their parents must be shunted and ostracised and published in news papers. Letsnot boast so and so got so many crores in dowry...rather lets hear it from educated boys....we don't need any dowry nor any gifts, we are men enough to take care of wife & family!!!

DK Shetty, while I fully agree with your comment, one thing I want to write for your remark that " if you are not a man enough, don't get married" Unfortunately, a large number of young men are either not employed or underemployed and if one has to go by your remark (which definitely I like) they will never be able to get married for life. With less income, they cannot do anything, they cannot go for a separate house to take their wives, hence, they get married at right age and cling to their mother's apron. This is the problem in India. No doubt, I definitely am against dowry and harassment of daughters-in law.

Why parents are forcing their daughters to get married at a young age. They should give them good education atleast till graduation level and allow them to work for few years until they stand on their own feet. Good proposals will come to them when they are on the job . Let educated girl allowed to become independent and exposed herself to this world and come out as a strong bold woman to face this cruel world. We must teach our daughters to be strong and independent rather than pushing them to get married at young age.

G Fernandes, Mangalore How can you say that in Asia one should not be born as poor and disabled.......can you tell in advance by the geographical location that there's going to be a poor or disabled birth. Even in the West (America and other neighbouring countries) people are born with severe constraints and backgrounds - there isn't any logic in your statement.

Surely, the parents had good intention to marry their daughters to settle in life, since other two daughters are growing up . But the bad luck snatched lives of both the young daughters for the cause of dowry. what a cruel happening. R.I.P.
