Bengaluru: Kumaraswamy urges Kerala not to change Kannada names of Kasargod villages

Bengaluru, Jun 27: JD(S) leader and former chief minister H D Kumaraswamy on Sunday June 27 condemned the act of Kerala government which is mulling of changing the Kannada names of villages of Kasargod and Manjeshwar to Malayalam. Kumaraswamy’s statement comes after MP Pratap Simha objected the move of the Kerala government. In addition, pro-Kannada activist Vatal Nagaraj also expressed his rage against the Kerala government’s attitude.


In a series of tweets former CM Kumaraswamy said, "I am aware that the Kerala government is resorting to change the names in Kannada to Malayalam in the district of Kasargod. I would like to bring some points to the attention of the Kerala government. Kasargod is attached to Karnataka also. People of Karnataka have cultural interaction with people of Kasargod. It has remained as an emblem of cordial relations.

"In Kasargod, Kannada and Malayalam speaking people are in equal numbers. They are living harmoniously. They never had any issue with regard to the languages they speak. It is necessary that we maintain the same in future also. Politics is being played with the sentiments of people in the name of language. There is a need to protect affinity towards language. So I feel that it is the responsibility of both the states to protect the traditions and sentiments of Kannadigas.

"The present Kannada names of villages of Kasargod are being changed to Malayalam. But it seems that the meaning remains the same. Their original Kannada name should be kept as such. I request the Kerala government to consider this through this tweet," Kumaraswamy urged.

In Mysuru, pro-Kannada activist Vatal Nagaraj also expressed rage against the changing of names of villages in Kasargod to Malayalam language. He said, "If the Kerala government changes the Kannada names of villages we will seal the Kerala border. We will not allow Keralites to enter Karnataka. Government has to take action immediately. Otherwise will resort to fierce protest. Karnataka government should discuss this matter with Kerala government. Otherwise we will close Kerala border."

    Is there no other work for the government to do for the development of the villages/panchayats/ taluks/districts/states/our nation instead of changing the name. Bloody politics. Bloody politician should know that it will create controversy. Do the developments and provide livelihood to people.

    In mangalore we did change Road names, circle names without any hesitation, and local bjp people supported whole heartedly. Now when its happening in neighbouring district we all woke up as if its a big earthquake. This name changing decease increased during BJP rule .

    Belagavi is a Marathi name. Maharashtrians had been calling by the same name even before it was changed.

    name changing is also feku's favorite activity... it is the lazy man's activity... he does not have to do any thing, just change the name and get some mileage, cause division in society for votebank.., from one religion to another, from one language to another.... piranha vijaya should concentrate on rebuilding state's reputation from that of drug business, gold smuggling, women discrimination, migrant criminals from other countries etc. etc. than this worthless activity of name change... feku changed the name of Planning Commission to NITI... what is the logic? what is the purpose? what is the intended benefit...?

    History tells Kasargod was Tulu Nadu weither now it be in Kerala or as per earlier indipendent commission report in Karnataka,its the Tulu speaking people's land hece the original Tulu names should not be changed .As in Kodagu dist. origional kodava language names excists.English is a British language hence the names were changed in Indian languages but Tulu is an anciant Dravidan language so the names should not be changed to Malayalam.

    soon, they will change all names to Malyaali in Mangalapuram also... kundapuram, koteshwaram, brahmavaram etc. these border villages of Kasaragod will be part of Tulu naadu... hence names should be changed to Tulu rather than malyaali...

    This kumar samy not uttering single word regarding skyrocketed fuel prices by BJP. He is bothered abour some useless ,non productive jobs. Grow up man concentrate on real issues, like unemployment, healthcare, etc in karnataka. Let kerala handle thier internal matters.     I also think, what is the need of changing the names. In what way it brings prosperity to the district.? However, a threat of closing the border won’t be heard by Mr. Vijayan, He is such a leader, even the Center could not twist his arm in many matters. He is a lion. So, the best solution is to pursue the matter thru proper channels till an amicable solution is found.

    Typical example of ignorance and hypocrisy! We Indians are notorious for mindless changing of names thereby erasing history associated with names and events. Take the case of changing the name of St. Aloysius college road that was in use for 100 years or so to some newbie founder of a bank , why? Often Names of places or towns have tremendous meaning and must be continued and remembered. Some sixty years ago, I recall some politicians in UP wanted to change the name of historic park that had been named as Ici 7 Patana , where Buddha preached his first sermon to some petty politician’s family name. The former was as old as Indian history, more than 2500 years old. Imagine that! Fortunately it didn’t go through.

    Minister Kumaraswamy has very well expressed the cause of not changing the old names.why the hell they are engaged in changing the names ?Let them first look into the real problems of our land ,than naming.Making only chaos as our BJP did.Why dont see how people are suffering without jobs .powerty,and education,.Proper classes for students are not there or means to have classes to students are missing .Look into this.
