Kasargod: MLA confirms names of Kannada villages will not undergo change

Daijiworld Media Network - Kasargod (SP)

Kasargod, Jun 29: Manjeshwar MLA A K M Ashraf, clarified that Kerala government has not issued any order seeking to rename certain villages that are in Kannada into Malayalam. A number of villages in Kasargod and Manjeshwar where Kannada is spoken predominantly, have Kannada names.

The legislator gave this clarification through social website, Facebook, at a time when there is hue and cry over the unsubstantiated information that names of Kannada villages are being changed to suit Malayali pronunciations.

Manjeshwar MLA A K M Ashraf

Ashraf said in his Facebook post that he had contacted the personal assistant of the chief minister and Kasargod district collector over phone and sought clarifications from them. Ashraf said that he got to know that no such proposal is before the government and no circular to make these changes have been issued. He hastened to admit that because of software issues and on account of technical snags names of some villages have been misspelt in ration cards and clarified that the district collector has assured to take emergent steps to set right the mistakes.

He said that being Manjeshwar MLA, he wants to clarify that the rumour that the Kannada names of villages have been changed is being circulated in social websites and the matter gained prominence after former chief minister H D Kumaraswamy, tweeted on the matter and central minister Pralhad Joshi, issued a statement. He also lamented about the statement issued by the Karnataka Border Development Authority chairman on the issue.

Ashraf expressed the opinion that there are certain problems which need to be addressed and the leaders should create an environment in which the same can be sorted out through organized efforts and that no confusion should arise in the matter of conserving and nurturing linguistic integration and cultural diversity. He promised to lead any struggles against any plan from the government to change names of any places, being a devoted Kannadiga, and that he will be always alert to protect the Kannada minority's constitutional rights.

Belgaum is a bilingual district. Marathi is widely used in the city corporation offices. Similarly Kannada must be allowed in the municipalities of Kasargod and other towns in the district.

Dr.Raviholla, Kundapura/Bengaluru Wayanadu might have Kannada because that district borders with Kannada heartland Mysore. But Kasaragod is hardcore Tulu land. Same like DK and Udupi. The oldest available inscriptions in Tulu was found in areas in and around Barkur & Ullur (both near Kundapura). Hence, these 3 districts (Kasargod, Udupi & DK) together should become a state with Tulu as its state language.

A team of experts from the Archaeological survey of India Mysore, visited the technology wing campus of the college of Fisheries at Hoige Bazar, Mangaluru and conducted an estampage on the two inscriptions on Monday and Observed Kannada and Portuguese inscription site. Kannada, one belongs to 11th century and Portuguese inscription may be 16th century. Tulu language doesn’t have its own script. It has been using Grantha script and it further modified to Malayalam script. I’ve not seen any literature in Tulu written in full fledged Tulu script even today.

There are many places where name gets pronounced differently when pronounced in three different languages(Malayalam, Kannada, English). For example, people when talking in Kannada they call place as Manjeshwara, when in Malayalam they call it Manjeshwaram, when in English they call it Manjeshwar. The same example can be given for mangalore as well. People from different places/community, call it differently. 80% places in Manjeshwar is named in Kannada, there is no plan to change any of these name. It is not feasible to do so. Locals will not allow to change names, no matter what is their mother tongue. Name of place is an identity, it cannot be changed without a valid reason. Somebody have mislead the leaders in Karnataka I guess.

Already they write Manjeshwaram, Neeleshwaram..etc but while talking they omit rum. MLA from Kasaragod have his name as Nellikunnu which itself pyrated. Mallus have head inside their mundu that will not change. They respect only Malayalam. But in Mangalore we have different languages which are treat to talk. The byari language is the simple and beautiful new language.
