Mangalore: Rousing Welcome to Queen’s Baton Relay Team in City

Mangalore, Sep 5: The Queen’s Baton Relay team of the Commonwealth Games reached the city on Sunday September 5 amid great fanfare.

The 98-member team which is travelling across the nation, led by wing commandant V N Singh, was accorded a grand welcome.

Mayor Rajani Dugganna accepted the baton and handed it over to city police commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh who then handed it over to MLA Yogish Bhat. The baton was carried by Vandana Rao and Vandana Shanbhag, international athletes from the region.

Dr B M Hegde, Sadananda Prabhu, Dinesh Kunder, Shobha Narayan, and Manjari Bhargavi were present.

The baton, which carries the queen’s message from England, has travelled various cities and places including Wagah Border before reaching the city on the 72nd day of travel.

After the baton relay reached Town Hall, Singh told the media that the people of Dakshina Kannada had welcomed them in a grand and organized manner and the baton will leave for Karwar through Udupi on Monday September 6. Various traditional cultural programmes were held at Town Hall afterwards.

    Some people are present only during events like election, queens baton etc etc. Dont know whats their motive. if they need publicity i would ask them to publish their picture everyday in the local news paper

    Even after 63 years of Independence from England, still we lick them. When the Queen’s Baton Relay team of the Commonwealth Games reached the city, surprised to watch so many politicians present. Some, during election rally or political rally had expressed their allergy to English and UK, have come to greet the Queen's baton.


    After all for my children English education, Western University and Western educated boy/girl as in - law. For others, speaking different language.
    Unfortunately very very few athletics or sports personalities. This is our true quality of our leaders.

    There were several athletes there in the event, both present and from past. Yet we get to hear only a couple of their names. But when it comes to politicians, we see all the names??

    We can hardly see any of the Sports personalities. If there will be any political Games, India would have been won the GOLD MEDAL without any doubts.
    And many of the gathered people dont know what is Queen's Baton Relay.??

    Great to see the yesteryear athletes. Wonder how many present athletes we have from the region.
    Really regret to see politicians????
