Mangalore: Rousing Welcome to Queen’s Baton Relay Team in City

Mangalore, Sep 5: The Queen’s Baton Relay team of the Commonwealth Games reached the city on Sunday September 5 amid great fanfare.
The 98-member team which is travelling across the nation, led by wing commandant V N Singh, was accorded a grand welcome.
Mayor Rajani Dugganna accepted the baton and handed it over to city police commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh who then handed it over to MLA Yogish Bhat. The baton was carried by Vandana Rao and Vandana Shanbhag, international athletes from the region.
Dr B M Hegde, Sadananda Prabhu, Dinesh Kunder, Shobha Narayan, and Manjari Bhargavi were present.
The baton, which carries the queen’s message from England, has travelled various cities and places including Wagah Border before reaching the city on the 72nd day of travel.
After the baton relay reached Town Hall, Singh told the media that the people of Dakshina Kannada had welcomed them in a grand and organized manner and the baton will leave for Karwar through Udupi on Monday September 6. Various traditional cultural programmes were held at Town Hall afterwards.
