Mangalore, Sep 6: The district-level Teachers' Day celebrations were held at St Aloysius School auditorium here on Sunday September 5.
The event was organized by the Dakshina Kannada district panchayat, and the city’s public instruction department.
Coastal Development Authority chairman B Nagaraj Shetty, inaugurating the programme, said that teachers mould the future citizens of the country. He added that all teachers must follow the example set by Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan whose birthday is celebrated as Teachers’ Day.
MLA Yogish Bhat presided over the function and said that students should be encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities and quality education is necessary in the present scenario.
Kannada lecturer and journalist Narendra Rai Derla, in his keynote address, said that schools should be given more importance than holy places and teachers should teach humanity and support students to erase caste system and communalism thus helping society to become a better place to live.
“Though the district is hub of education, the communal riots in the district show the failure of education in imparting human values to the students”, he added.
Several teachers from all over the district were honoured on the occasion. Among those felicitated were 13 teachers who had retired between November 2009 and July 2010. As many as 41 schools were granted endorsements worth Rs 10,000 each for securing cent percent results in the last SSLC examinations.
MLA UT Khader, Harikrishna Punaroor, former president, Kannada Sahitya Parishat, Pradeep Kumar Kalkura, president, DK District Kannada Sahitya Parishat, Shantha, corporator, and Dayavathi, block education officer, were among those present.
