Mangalore, Sep 8: September 8 happens to be the birth anniversary of Holy Mary, or ‘Monti’ in local parlance. The occasion, the ‘Feast of Immaculate Conception’ celebrated elsewhere in the world on the occasion of the Nativity of Mary, is celebrated as ‘Monti Fest’ by the Konkani-speaking Christian populace present predominantly in Coastal Karnataka.

This is the biggest festival for parishes across Karnataka coast, particularly the twin-districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi. The people use this occasion to salute the kindness of the divine powers and earn their kindness. This is also the festival in which they thankfully acknowledge the kindness of Mother Nature and mother earth for the bounteous crops.

On September 8, the Catholics consume only vegetarian meal, known as ‘Nove Jevan (New Meal)’. Processions are held, normally by taking a statue of Baby Mary along. People carry baskets of flowers and ears of paddy in their hands while walking in the processions, which start from the church, pass through decorated streets, and reach the church premises again. The children shower flowers on Mother Mary’s statue at the church. The newly harvested rice stalks and sugarcanes, duly blessed by the priests, are then taken home by the people. The grains are crushed at home, added to milk, and served to the family members.

Monti Fest is gaining popularity all over the globe these days, as it is celebrated in every town where the population of Konkani-speaking people is sizeable. Singing of hymns, ‘Sakkad Sangatha Melyam’ and ‘Moriyek Hogolsyam’ has been an inherent part of Monti Fest. The people feel blessed and blissful by paying obeisance to Mother Mary on her birth anniversary.

One of the earliest Monti Fests was celebrated at Milagres Church in the city in 1906. Even the busiest of people take time off to be a part of the procession, to hail Monti’s kindness and get divine blessings, on ‘Monti Fest’.

Wishing all a very Happy Nativity Feast. Pray to mother Mary and ask the blessings you need. I am sure shee will grant it for you. Remember you should have faith. It is not just you remember her when you are in need. Keep in touch with her and Jesus via rosery and prayers. Prayer is the one that does not cost you anything but gives rewards / blessings.

It was sheer joy when we were small to go to various places to pluck the flowers and throw them inside the church during the verse of the hymn "THANCHO EK MUKUT GUNTHIAN ANIM MAEK DIVHYAN" Nice to note that the tradition is being carried out. Keep it up!

    Happy Feast to all,
The Monti fest is celebrated along with harvest festival (Nove) by catholic community in coastal region of Karnataka, the first produce(crop) of the year is blessed in the church by priest and distributed among parisioners, is consumed with greatness by thanking the Lord Almighty for all the graces and blessings showering upon them through out the year. In our childhood the three local bands use to play in every christian houses in the village of Tallur, Kundapur Taluk, and in the evening in the church compound sports and games competions were held, infact the day was filled with happiness and joy.

Lord God,the day of our salvation dawned when the Blessed Virgin gave birth to your Son. As we celebrate her nativity grant us your grace and your peace. Through Christ our Lord, Amen.
Many miracles happened and every day Mother Mary is taking care of me and my family. Rosary is the best way to keep touch with Mother Mary and she will Love and take care of every one who have faith on her and ask help from her. She will never say NO to any one in their true need. I do remember my childhood, after school we use to collect flowers and always trying to be there to shower flowers to Baby Mary. Thanks to Daijiworld for bring up this event and reminding to all of us our faith and our childhood.
