Panaji, Jul 6: On Monday HC issued notice to the state government over a public interest litigation (PIL) filed with regards to awarding compensation to victims of abuse and crimes under the Goa Victim Compensation Scheme.
Stop Child Abuse Now (SCAN) has filed the PIL stating that as per statistics available with it, in 98% of the 2,000 cases, the victim knew the perpetrator thereby disentitling them to any benefit under the scheme.
Out of the 65 applications filed by SCAN since 2017, many haven’t been processed and six were rejected for not meeting the eligibility criteria under clause 4 of the scheme. Many of the victims are women and children from the lowest strata of society and if they are appropriately compensated their lives will improve, the petitioner stated.
