Kundapur, Jul 7: Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president D K Shivakumar visited Mahakali temple, the abode of the deity of Konkani Kharvi community, here, on Tuesday night.
He was welcomed by Mahakali temple committee secretary Keshava Kharvi. Temple management committee president Jayananda Kharvi gave a brief description of the Konkani Kharvi community. He described in detail the atrocities in progress against the community at Tonka, Kasargod, Honnavar and requested the Congress leader to be their voice, provide justice against the injustice in progress at Kasargod and make the lives of fishermen better. D K Shivakumar assured them that he will visit the area on Wednesday and help them.
He said that he travelled in undivided Dakshina Kannada district and found that the community members are the devotees of the river Ganges supporting their several family members by fishing.
“The fishermen who are struggling for their livelihood should get justice. It is the responsibility of the government to set right unfair treatment of the unorganized sector workers including fishermen during the Corona pandemic. The failure of the government in this connection is already discussed. I will surely speak for the fishermen,” he said.
Former minister Vinay Kumar Sorake, former MLA K Gopala Poojary, district Congress president Ashok Kumar Kodavoor, Congress’s Mithun Kumar Rai, Kishan Hegde Kolkebail, Hariprasad Shetty Bidkalkatte, Malyadi Shivarama Shetty, Chandrashekar Kharvi, Sridhar Sherigar, Devaki Sannayya, Abu Mohammed, Kumar Kharvi and other Kharvi community members and congress workers were present.
